Position Description:

Employees in this classification are responsible for day-to-day maintenance of animals assigned and basic maintenance of animal room associated with the facility. Employees in this classification have no delegated supervisory responsibilities but may aid the supervisor in training new employees. Work consists of both direct and indirect contact with animals. Conditions may become stressful because of animal odors. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, animals exposed to toxic materials, radioactive materials, bites, lacerations, etc.. Conditions may become hazardous if animals become ill or are being treated with known toxic substances (i.e., carcinogens, microbial substances. etc). Weekend and holiday assignments on a rotational basis are expected.

Major/Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing animal rooms and support areas, including corridors, procedure rooms and laundry areas.

  • Responsible for animal husbandry, changing animals from dirty cages to clean cages. Ensure all animals have fresh food and water daily.

  • Assess each animals health on a daily basis and report to supervisor. Perform weekend health check in rotation with other staff members, including BSL2 and BSL3.

  • Prepare cages with clean bedding. Fill water bottles. Autoclave cages and water bottles.

  • Responsible for dirty side husbandry. Dumping dirty cages, putting it on the rack to send to the cage washer. Dump dirty water bottles and prepare to send through the cage washer. Dump cages from BSL2 after autoclaving. Bio-hazardous waste is dumped in appropriate bins. Dumpster is emptied at the end of the day.

  • Assist in preparing for inspections of facility by regulatory agencies.

  • Adhere to all TTUHSCEP policies, procedures and processes.

  • Personally demonstrate, display, and act in accordance with TTUHSCEP’s values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork). Actively promote and encourage staff across the institution.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
