Job duties and responsibilities

Provide quality in the refinery with an emphasis on Safety, while following all compliance policies and procedures established and/or relevant regulatory agencies. The crane operator operates cranes to lift, move, place or position large objects, such as machinery, equipment, or construction material. Crane operators need to know how to maintain their equipment and will do pre-operation checks to confirm everything stays safe. Crane operators should expect to perform many different duties, which can include:

  • Operate crane to lift, move, position and place equipment or materials.

  • Operate crane to load and unload materials

  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and clean, lubricate and refuel equipment.

A crane operator uses the crane to lift, move, position and place materials or equipment in specific areas for the refinery. The job involves pre-checking the equipment before each use to ensure it is safe to use and ensure the safety of the work environment. Clear communication is a critical component as a crane operator, working with other employees, contractors, or planners to understand the orders and requirements of the job.

Skills and qualifications

  • Technical knowledge of how to properly use equipment needed for the job.

  • Expert knowledge of the types of materials being moved, placed, loaded, or unloaded.

  • Excellent oral communication skills with close attention to detail.

  • Understanding of how to conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and how to maintain them.

  • Understanding of all safety requirements for the job site.

Experience requirements

  • A successful candidate for a crane operator position should have previous experience working with cranes on construction sites, industrial sites, oil rigs or cargo bays. Experience in maintaining and doing pre-operating checks on cranes is also a must. They also must have experience working as part of a team while maintaining a safe working environment.

Education and training requirements

  • Certification for crane operation is required.

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision

  • Ability to effectively communicate, both written and oral skills

  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage job requirements

  • Ability to maintain composure in difficult situations

  • Computer skills

  • A good knowledge of industrial safety guidelines and regulations

  • Work with specialized heavy equipment and successfully completed a one-to-three-year apprenticeship program. It is highly recommended the individual has completed some college, trade school, or industrial course on ‘crane equipment maintenance and operation’ with previous on-the-job training.
