Smithsonian Institution Biologist Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Term Appt NTE 3 Years in Edgewater, Maryland

Summary The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is in the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is responsible for ecological and environmental research education Responsibilities The Biologist is responsible for conceiving, planning and conducting highly specialized research in areas of specialization (reef ecology, urban estuarine ecology, or marine biodiversity conservation) and expected to perform scholarly research and participate in making contribution to the biological, ecological physical or chemical fields of science. In this position, you will: Initiate, develop, and participate in research and fieldwork in oyster reef ecology or marine biodiversity conservation. Write reports and publishable scientific papers and give oral presentations on the design and results of research and experiments. Serve as a consultant and advisor on professional matters in oyster reef ecology or marine biodiversity conservation and assists with guidance and teaching of students and technicians working on research projects. Assist or lead in preparation, submission, and review of grant proposals, manuscripts, and publications as requested by scientific colleagues and outside institutions. Term appointments are non-status, non-permanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 10 years. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 10-year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for permanent employment. Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist. A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience listed below: GS-09 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position Specialized experience is defined researching, investigating oyster reef ecology or marine biodiversity conservation, or related subject area. OR Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such degree. You must submit a copy of your unofficial college transcripts for verification to be considered. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
