The Global Compliance & Ethics team plays a critical role in protecting American Express, our brand and colleagues through practical, solution-focused guidance on regulatory and ethics-related matters.

Within the International Compliance organisation, the Global Merchant and Network Services (GMNS) International Compliance team performs second-line oversight of the merchant acquiring and network businesses in International, ensuring a robust and sustainable compliance risk management framework. The team is responsible for providing Compliance advisory to the GMS Business on the management of strategic multi-country business initiatives and compliance risks as well as performing execution of core components of the American Express Compliance Program.

Reporting to the Vice President Global Merchant & Network Services International Compliance, the Director GMS Compliance will be responsible for:

How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Coordinating the Compliance risk assessment for emerging payment models including PayFacs, OptBlue and indirect intermediaries.

  • Leading a team of experienced compliance managers responsible for providing expert compliance advice and guidance to the GMS business in the design and implement new products, emerging payment models, customer interactions, processes and controls in compliance with applicable laws and regulations

  • Enhancing and maintaining a comprehensive and sustainable second line oversight program of the GMS third party payment models and relationships

  • Overseeing timely execution of the compliance program for EMEA and providing leadership updates on key business initiatives and compliance risk for EMEA.

  • Point of escalation for the team and stakeholders, ensuring appropriate and timely resolution of risks and issues

  • Collaborating with a broad group of stakeholders including GCO, Market Compliance, Global Financial Crimes Compliance, Privacy, Operational Excellence and broader GMS business teams, to ensure compliance with Enterprise-wide policies and procedures and local regulatory requirements.

  • Providing compliance input on the development and evolution of centrally managed GMS policies, products, capabilities, processes and controls to enable the business to comply with all applicable laws and regulations

  • Contributing to planning and program tracking activities to ensure appropriate traction and reporting of strategic risks and initiatives in the region, proactively identifying funding and resource requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Seasoned people leader with experience building and transforming teams and leading and developing individuals across multiple locations

  • Significant experience leading a compliance program and/or complex multi-market projects addressing compliance and control requirements including Anti-Money Laundering, Sanctions, Anti-Corruption, Data Privacy and Payments Regulation

  • Knowledge of the merchant acquiring business, external payments landscape and associated control and compliance framework

  • Proven ability to set the agenda on complex, evolving legal and regulatory requirements

  • Self-motivated, energetic team player with proven ability to drive results in changing and ambiguous situations in a complex matrixed organization

  • Strong relationship and collaboration skills with the ability to build relationships and influence a broad group of stakeholders, at all levels.

  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to communicate complex topics in a clear and effective manner to senior leaders across the organisation

  • Universitydegree and or compliance/legal qualification advantageous.
