Here are a few things you should know:
  • This site is mobile friendly. You do not need a log-in or password to access information.
  • Jobs on this site are original and unduplicated and come from three sources: the Federal government, state workforce agency job banks, and corporate career websites. All jobs are vetted to ensure there are no scams, training schemes, or phishing.
  • The site is refreshed daily to remove out-of-date content.
  • The newest jobs are listed first, so use the search features to match your interests. You can look for jobs in a specific geographical location, by title or keyword, or you can use the military crosswalk. You may want to do something different from your military career, but you undoubtedly have skills from that occupation that match to a civilian job.

Job Information

Michigan State University(MSU) Staff Engineer FRIB/NSCL-Continuing in East Lansing, Michigan

Working/Functional Title

High Power Targetry Staff Engineer

Position Summary

The High Power Targetry Staff Engineer will support the establishment of various beam-intercepting devices in FRIB with a focus on the heat transfer engineering. Because those devices intercept high-power heavy ion beams, they suffer extreme heat load that other accelerator facilities have never experienced. To reach the ultimate goal of the 400 kW beam power, state-of-the-art heat transfer engineering is required to efficiently remove the heat deposited by the beams in the devices. The High Power Targetry Staff Engineer will lead the heat transfer engineering design and performance testing/validation of those advanced devices.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

Target and Beam Dump Systems (50%)

  • Lead the heat transfer engineering design and performance testing/validation of the advanced beam dump system to achieve efficient removal of the heat deposited by the primary beam.
  • Support beam dump operations for user experiments. This includes technical support during normal working hours, on-call shifts at night, and over weekends
  • Collaborate with scientists who are knowledgeable in radiation damage of materials. Take into account that in the heat transfer design, the beam dump material property changes due to beam irradiation.
  • Support other beam dump engineering design and performance testing

Charge Selector (30%)

  • Lead the heat transfer engineering design and performance testing/validation of the high-power charge selector to achieve efficient removal of the heat deposited by the beam.
  • Support charge selector operations for user experiments. This includes technical support during normal working hours, on-call shifts at night, and over weekends
  • Collaborate with scientists who are knowledgeable in radiation damage of materials. Take into account that in the heat transfer design, the charge selector material property changes due to beam irradiation.
  • Support other charge selector engineering design and performance testing

Charge Strippers (20%)

  • Support thermo-fluid dynamic analysis to understand the thermal response of the liquid lithium charge stripper thin film to high-power heavy ion beam irradiation
  • Support thermo-mechanical analysis to understand the thermal response of the rotating carbon foil stripper to high-power heavy ion beam irradiation
  • Support operations of charge strippers for user experiments. This includes technical support during normal working hours, on-call shifts at night, and over weekends

General (occasional)

  • Work with stakeholders within the division as well as those outside of the division as necessary using clearly articulated (either verbal or written) communications to make sure smooth laboratory operations
  • Collaborate with scientists in world's leading heavy ion facilities to gain and apply the latest knowledge/discoveries to the FRIB's beam-intercepting devices
  • Publish papers in research journals
  • Attend conferences and workshops to share and exchange the latest knowledge with worldwide scientists

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Through knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer theory
  • General knowledge and ability to use SolidWorks and ANSYS (or other finite element methods as engineering calculation tools)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with audiences at all management levels
  • Ability to accommodate shift work to support FRIB operations
  • Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate sound critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently, within a team, and in an extensive collaboration
