Michigan State University(MSU) Specialist - Outreach-Fixed Term in East Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary

Applications are invited for a twelve-month, fixed-term Academic Specialist-Outreach position for the Natural Science Transfer Scholars (NSTS) program. NSTS is an NSF-funded Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) partnership between the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University (MSU), Mott Community College (MCC), and Washtenaw Community College (WCC), which aims to promote the successful transfer of academically talented, low-income STEM students. While this position will be located within the Charles Drew Science Scholars Program at MSU, which offers academic and social support to MSU's Natural Science Transfer Scholars, the individual hired will be expected to spend time on the MCC and WCC campuses to build relationships with students, faculty, and advisors. This one-year position offers the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years based on satisfactory performance.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

 

· Development of engaging promotional content for the program at the three campuses, such as social media, web content, newsletters, and/or videos to recruit and celebrate accomplishments of S-STEM scholarship recipients

· Travel between the three campuses to build relationships with students, faculty, advisors, and admissions counselors

· Dissemination of information and promotional content about the program through participation in existing events connected to the three campuses

· Active recruitment of eligible students to MCC, WCC, and/or MSU

· Serving as a bridge between the three institutions in recruitment efforts and communication with external evaluator about these efforts.

· Training and coordination of peer mentors at MSU

· Development of information sessions for prospective students to meet current program students at MCC, WCC, and MSU.

Minimum Requirements

· Master's degree -- Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, STEM, or related field

· Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

· Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in a professional or educational setting

Desired Qualifications

· Graduate assistantship, practicum, or professional experience in academic advising, admissions, or other academic or student affairs role in higher education

· Experience working with STEM students

· Familiarity with science curricula or science majors

· Familiarity with community colleges and transfer from 2-year to 4-year institutions
