Michigan State University(MSU) Specialist - Advisor-Continuing in East Lansing, Michigan

Working/Functional Title

Director of Undergraduate Student Engagement

Position Summary

The Broad College structures and supports student engagement in several different ways including student organizations, case study and other competitions developing business skills and acumen, undergraduate research opportunities, etc. Beyond these structured opportunities, there are a breadth of speaker events, diversity forums, and opportunities for student skill development (e.g., programming and analytics) that are made available throughout each semester. In a college as large as Broad, and even with ongoing communication efforts, it is often difficult for a student to be aware of these opportunities; even if aware, students miss  understanding how these opportunities support their development. However, employers, corporate partners and alumni have all spoken unanimously about the importance of these co-curricular activities in securing internships, full-time placement, and overall career progress.

Broad360 is a student engagement platform powered by Suitable and accessed on mobile phones that aggregates student engagement opportunities in an appealing and interactive environment. Broad360 comprises a growing number of badges where each badge is made up of a set of required and/or elective activities. The badges are linked to our Assurance of Learning competencies, NACE competencies, and other important college themes. Students are recognized and rewarded through the completion of badges.

The critical job responsibilities of the Director of Undergraduate Student Engagement include:

  • Management and integration of the Broad360 platform into all appropriate Broad curricular and co-curricular activities to increase student engagement and enhance the Broad community.

  • Provide leadership, strategic vision, organization, and administrative oversight of nearly 50 Broad Registered Student Organizations.

  • Advisor to the Broad Leaders Council, the organizational structure for all Broad registered student organizations. Co-Advisor to the Broad Student Senate.

  • Oversee college-wide activities (communication to student and process for linking faculty/staff support) associated with co-curricular learning, including undergraduate research opportunities, case studies, etc.

  • Collaborate across college academic departments and support units to communicate and support undergraduate engagement opportunities.

  • Develop relationships with key national associations that support student development including Forte (women in business), etc.

  • Serve as a member of the Spartan Experience Record advisory committee as requested.

  • Envision and manage a facility usage model for the Engagement Center and adjoining conference room.

  • Engage in fundraising and donor identification to secure program sustainability.

Creating greater visibility and opportunity for student engagement is critical for our Broad students to more fully understand the linkage between their coursework and their professional development. We firmly believe that increasing visibility and access to such activities will strengthen the Broad undergraduate community where students will hold greater expectations around what they can and should accomplish outside the classroom during their MSU career.
