Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

Michigan State University has an opening for a nine-month staff assistant position (internship) with the athletic communications office.

OVERVIEW: The staff assistant will assist in all operations of the Office of Athletic Communications and will be directly responsible for working with multiple sports, in addition to assisting with football, men's and women's basketball, and ice hockey. The individual will also assist with gameday duties at athletic events and aid in creating content and help furthering develop the initiatives in social media and multimedia on the department's official website, msuspartans.com. Other duties as assigned by Associate Athletics Director/Communications.

COMPENSATION: Nine-month hourly contract (40 hours a week). There will be occasional opportunities to work additional events for extra pay.

START DATE: The selected candidate would begin in mid-August.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two yearsexperience as a sports information/athletic communications student assistant or intern (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Computer knowledge (statistical programs, desktop publishing)
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate sound judgment and discretion with sensitive information regarding student-athletes, university staff, and the Athletic Department. The MSU Athletic Communications office uses Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, NCAA Live Stats and Stat Crew Software; previous experience with these programs is preferred.
