Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary position.

To work as a laborer in a wide variety of routine manual labor areas.

Unit Position Summary

In this position, you will play an integral role by assisting and leading in a wide variety of routine manual labor tasks related to general hardscape maintenance. We’re passionate about maintaining the natural beauty of Michigan State University’s campus, so come be a part of the reason why so many students, staff, faculty, and community members love this place!

This entry level position is year-round, fulltime (40 hours per week). Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM.

Starting pay is $19.29/hour with an increase to $20.23/hour after 6 months and 1040 hours worked, based on satisfactory performance.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining campus streets, sidewalks, and parking lots.

  • Assist in graffiti removal on campus hardscapes.

  • Help install and repair benches, trash cans, and all other landscape furniture as needed.

  • Operate backpack blowers, power washers, post pounder and other equipment utilized by the Hard Surface Crew.

  • Cold patching holes in streets and parking lots.

  • Assist with placement and pick up of traffic barricades.

  • Assist with tailgate football cleanup every Sunday after home football games.

Minimum Requirements

Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license is required. Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification. Applicant must have a good driving record and be able to pass the departmental motor vehicle background check; be able to pass university criminal background check; wear requested safety footwear such as a leather work boot; possess or attain a MSU forklift operator's permit within 3 months of hire date; Possess or attain a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification (Core only) within 6 months of hire date. Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds. Must be able to work in variable or severe weather conditions. This position may require significant after-hours, weekend, and holiday work. MSU is a tobacco free campus, prohibiting all use on campus, including using tobacco on work breaks and in personal vehicles parked on campus.

Desired Qualifications

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

Experience in landscape maintenance/installation, construction, logistics, delivery or agriculture work; Experience operating industrial or commercial equipment used in landscaping, construction or agricultural work (i.e. welding, forklift, mowing, sky track, cement mixer, truck/trailer, tractor, skid steer, etc.); Experience with hand tools (i.e. rake, shovel weed whip, blower, drill, grinder, spreader, chainsaw, pruners/lopper, etc.); Paid experience in commercial snow removal operating a licensed plow vehicle; Possession of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator license; Industry certifications i.e. arborist certifications, C.G.I.P, N.A.L.P, Master gardener, equipment training records, etc.; Commercial driver's license(s) with State of Michigan requirements.
