Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according toU.S. News & World Report.

This position affords an exciting opportunity to become part of the world-class FRIB Laboratory that enables unique discovery opportunities in nuclear science.

Purpose:

The Electrical Engineer will serve as a project lead, give strategic direction, and provide guidance in the concepts, design, and implementation of complex electrical systems and the electrical safety program.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide electrical integration between the three hardware divisions of FRIB – Accelerator Systems, Experimental Systems and Conventional Facilities.

  • Review designs and monitor the installation of electrical systems throughout the Laboratory.

  • Provide planning for design, installation operation and modification of major electrical systems.

  • Analyze all levels of total electrical system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.

  • Serve as the Area Coordinator for electrical rooms.

  • Maintain and implement the Electrical Safety Program and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Program.

  • Review LOTO procedures and assist in LOTO training

  • Review and inspect custom electronic and electrical systems.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to use industry-specific tools to analyze and test electronics

  • Thorough knowledge of complex electrical systems

  • Thorough knowledge of system-level detailing and electrical system designs for installation

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical engineering codes and safety standards

  • Ability to understand and implement designs from technical drawings

  • Ability to lead engineers or technicians to fabricate, install, test, and troubleshoot electronic systems

  • Superior ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders to understand and document requirements

  • Skilled at attention to detail and ability to document explicitly and accurately

  • Advanced skills in developing and maintaining electrical drawings

  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in physics, electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting, fabrication techniques, heat transfer, cryogenics and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering

Desired Qualifications

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering

  • 10+years of relevant work experience

  • Successful background in leading projects and meeting project requirements with team leadership skills

  • Licensed Professional Engineer

  • Experience with building electrical distribution, designing or inspecting electrical systems and equipment, and/or NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E codes

  • Experience with particle accelerators or associated technologies

  • Prior project management experience or formal project management training
