Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine invites applications for the position of Director of Assessment. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education. The Director of Assessment will focus on student assessment in the required courses for the Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree program.

The Director of Assessment will:

  • Work closely with the course directors to oversee the design and implementation of student assessments in the core Human Medicine courses of the Shared Discovery Curriculum (HM 552-556, HM 651-655).  These courses use progress testing as a core methodology for assessment, including the Comprehensive Necessary Science Examination and the Progress Clinical Skills Examination. The Director of Assessment oversees the development and evaluation of these assessments. In addition, these courses include multisource feedback, direct observations of clinical skills, portfolio items, and assessments specific to the course and course materials.
  • Work with the course directors for the HM courses listed above to develop course syllabi and assessments specific to courses.
  • Serve as a resource and support for other course directors (particularly the required clerkships) and the Curriculum Committee regarding student assessment.
  • Provide administrative support and oversight for the Student Competence Committee and its associated subcommittees.
  • Report to the Curriculum Committee regarding student performance, recommendations for changes in the Manual for Assessment and Promotion, and changes in progress examination expectations.
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of reports on student performance for individual students, course directors, the Curriculum Committee, and SDC leadership.
  • Oversee analysis of student data to identify areas of potential curricular improvement, in collaboration with course directors and other faculty leaders.
  • Participate in hiring and supervision of the assessment associate director and staff members.
  • Work with stakeholders within and external to the college, including but not limited to other units within Academic Affairs, Office of Student Affairs and Services, departmental course directors, accrediting bodies, the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), medical students, faculty members, and the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC).
  • Complete educational assignments, typically related to assessment, as assigned by Academic Affairs.
  • Support an innovative/evolving curriculum designed for student experiential learning by managing changing assessment and program evaluation needs.
  • Oversee the Assessment unit budget.

Academic department and rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate must have a higher education background and experience with data science or analytic methods such as statistics, epidemiology, computer science, etc.
