Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Student Wellness and Engagement. The role is within the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) and reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. This role will be focused on leading and advocating in the areas of student wellness, student well-being, and student engagement. This leader will direct efforts across the two first and second year Early Clinical Experience (ECE) and Middle Clinical Experience (MCE) campuses and the eight Late Clinical Experience (LCE) community campuses. The assistant dean will collaborate closely with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education (ADUME), the Associate Dean for Community Academic Programs (ADCAP), and the Community Assistant Deans (CAD).  This role also collaborates with stakeholders across the college and the university on initiatives related to student wellness and engagement and serves as a resource on these matters.

The assistant dean will:

Serve as the key administrative leader and advocate in the areas of student well-being and student health for the College of Human Medicine.

Serve as the director of student counseling and wellness and provide oversight for two assistant directors of student counseling and wellness.

Provide oversite of monitoring immunization and health status of medical students, which is completed by the Community Health Outreach Specialist.

Develop and implement a comprehensive student wellness and well-being program for medical students across the four-year medical school experience.

Lead faculty for the Mental Health and Wellness curriculum.

Provide cross-coverage to serve students across the college's eight community campuses.

Direct the Student Health and Wellness team consisting of Assistant Directors of Student Counseling and Wellness in Grand Rapids and East Lansing and other professionals selected in this area to promote and safeguard student well-being across the medical training experience.

Develop and chair a Student Wellness Advisory Committee.

Coordinate educational opportunities for faculty and staff development around issues related to student well-being and student mental health.

Organize and maintain student well-being events scheduled throughout the year.

Responsible for managing processes and procedures related to health access partner/mental healthcare.

Responsible for keeping information up to date on the student health and wellbeing website.

Responsible for monitoring students who have been placed under drug or alcohol monitoring programs by the college.

Collaborate and consult with administrators, faculty, and staff on topics related to medical student well-being.

Serve as liaison to university units that address student health and wellbeing outside of the college.

Serve as a liaison to community agencies and organizations for volunteer service and student outreach, facilitating the linkage of ECE and MCE students to community service opportunities. 

Oversight of student membership organizations and non-career interest groups. 

Serve as Co-Advisor for the CHM Student Council and other student organizations as assigned.

Generate letters of recommendation as requested for special programs and student opportunities.

Assist with the annual student scholarship application process for designated donor scholarships with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

Provide linkage for medical students to outside scholarship opportunities as assigned

Generate scholarship in the areas of student engagement, health promotion, mental health, and wellness.
