The Dynamics, Control, and Autonomy Team, part of the Aerothermal and Intelligent Systems Department, at RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) is looking for a highly motivated individual for the position of research engineer specialized in Autonomy and/or Operations-Support Technologies.

The Dynamics, Controls, and Autonomy team supports dynamical system analysis and modeling, control system analysis and design, and autonomous systems research for all RTX business units, including both development of novel solutions for future products and solving the toughest problems with current products. In parallel, we are working with government customers on more broadly applicable technology.

What You Will Do:

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with broad expertise in robotics, autonomy, software, machine learning and optimization to apply and extend the state of the art . The candidate is expected to work on transitioning novel concepts from early technology stages to a state that impacts and influences businesses and applications.

The responsibilities include:

  • Lead technology maturation for advanced autonomy algorithms and capabilities for both business and government customers, including AI-assisted course of action generation, collaborative autonomy, mission management, multi-agent path planning, and AI assurance;

  • Lead validation, demonstration, and transition of autonomy capabilities as part of both government-funded and company-funded R&D programs, including rapid prototype deployment and demonstration on hardware platforms

  • Lead the development and delivery of integrated robotic, imaging, and machine learning systems for industrial applications like automated inspections of parts.

  • Lead and supporting externally and internally sponsored programs, writing external and internal research proposals;

  • Build relationships to support developing business relationships with industry, academia, and government agencies;

  • Disseminating research results through reports, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed articles, and developing intellectual property.

  • Communicate with a broad range of stakeholders, both technical and non-technical, and manage tech transition efforts with the business unit and government customers.

Qualifications You Must Have:

The candidate will have:

  • Preferred: Ph.D. in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering with 5+ years of professional experience.

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

  • Autonomous systems, from high-level algorithms to embedded software implementation, including industry experience

  • Delivering complex systems and/or algorithms or software features at product level

  • Machine learning, optimization and software engineering

The candidate will have solid skills in the following areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML) for perception and sensing

  • AI-assisted course of action generation

  • Collaborative autonomy, mission management, and multi-agent path planning

  • Embedded software development and validation

Qualifications We Prefer:

Experience with one or more of these is desirable:

  • Experience with writing proposals for Gov’t funded research, record of grants

  • Real-time control prototyping and Software/Hardware-in-the-Loop testing

  • Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE)

  • Control system analysis and design

  • Reinforcement learning

  • Experience with 3D rendering pipelines such as trimesh, OpenGL, etc.

  • Software life-cycle management experience

  • Assurance of AI systems

The salary range for this role is 118,000 USD - 246,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
