Lockheed Martin Research Engineer – Computational Hypersonics in Eagan, Minnesota

Description: We are seeking a motivated individual looking to contribute to advancing research for Lockheed Martin’s hypersonic systems. The candidate is expected to perform modeling and simulation tasks that encompasses a wide range of hypersonic environments. This role expects the candidate to have familiarity with aerothermal physics, structural and fluid dynamics, and advanced mechanics. MATLAB or software equivalent proficiency is preferred. The broad nature of this role allows the candidate to extend their talent beyond hypersonics and should expect to expand their skillset to additional areas in advanced research at ATL. Candidates will partake in small, focused development teams in order to create real world solutions using scientific first principles into innovative designs for applied technologies.

The Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) is a Lockheed Martin applied research and development center focused on rapidly advancing capabilities for U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) platforms. Aligned with the Corporation's Chief Technology Officer, we work to proliferate scientific discovery and technology transition in human systems, robotics and autonomy, spectrum systems, data analytics, hypersonics and more!

We support research and technology development for projects funded externally and internally helping advance the state-of-the-art for Defense and prepare our customers and Lockheed Martin for the future of tomorrow.

As an researcher at SSL your day-to-day responsibilities vary based on the needs of our programs. We pride ourselves in the flexibility we give to our engineers to pursue research that is of interest to them and give opportunities for engineers to grow and learn about what others in the lab are doing. Based on our current needs, your skills and the skills you wish to acquire, you could be tasked with any of the following:

· Develop models and simulations to predict material performance subjected to hypersonic environments.

· Perform verification studies and uncertainty quantification to determine model accuracy.

· Perform sensitivity studies and implement optimization algorithms to understand how key parameters affect desired performance.

· Lead research & development projects to innovate and provide new/novel solutions for novel problems.

· Participate in ground/flight tests including arc jet testing, wind tunnel testing, light-gas gun experimentation, and more.

· Assist in the acquisition of new business by formulating modern day solutions to customer problems.

Basic Qualifications:

Strong proficiency with mechanical/aerospace engineering first-principles.

B.S. Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related field.

Proficiency with embedded systems software programming in C, C++, or Python.

Good team working and collaboration skills.

Ability to obtain a security clearance to at least the Secret level.

Desired Skills:

Knowledge of hypersonic aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, shock interactions, and/or particle interactions in high-speed flight.

Proficiency with modeling and simulation tools such as US3D, CFD++, or similar.

Proficiency with high-performance computing resources.

Experience with source code management tools such as Git or similar.

Proficiency with modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Labview.

Theoretical or practical experience with computational physics.

Security Clearance Statement: This position requires a government security clearance, you must be a US Citizen for consideration.

Clearance Level: Secret

Ability to Work Remotely: Part-time Remote Telework: The employee selected for this position will work part of their work schedule remotely and part of their work schedule at a designated Lockheed Martin facility. The specific weekly schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.

Schedule for this Position: 4x10 hour day, 3 days off per week
