Element Materials Technology Microbiologist I in Eagan, Minnesota

Overview

Element has a current opening for a Microbiologist I to join our growing team in Eagan, MN. The Microbiologist I (a) performs and evaluates several different microbiological efficacy testing methods; (b) assists in data generation while maintaining a high level of scientific integrity; and (c) assists with and designs research and development (R&D) projects when implementing new methods or adapting current methods.

This position involves working in the lab daily with a group of associates who will support and train the candidate to become a vital team member of the group.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, evaluates and interprets a wide range of microbiological assays including basic analytical titrations in accordance with SOP and protocols under the full guidance and direction of the Study Director.

  • Assists with the development of and performs, evaluates and interprets Research and Development (R&D) projects with the guidance of the Study Director and/or Microbiology Lab Supervisor.

  • Assists in implementing new methodologies with the guidance of the Study Director and/or Microbiology Lab Supervisor. Aids in report (data) generation as needed.

  • Performs microorganism propagation, stock culture maintenance, daily culture transfers and organism preparations using aseptic technique.

  • Responsible for generating and maintaining strict documentation of raw data to ensure a high level of scientific integrity in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for the documentation and maintenance of applicable training records.

  • Performs general and supplemental laboratory duties when requested by lab supervisor.

  • Assists with the monitoring, cleaning and decontaminating of laboratory equipment on a routine basis.

  • Assists with the review of paperwork generated by the Microbiology Laboratory as necessary.

  • Assists with developing and refining new and existing Standard Operating Procedures and forms.

  • Provides information to supervisors and co-workers by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.

  • Responsible for communicating laboratory issues and trends to the lab supervisor and to peers when these issues are discovered.

  • Responsible for assisting with the completion of all daily laboratory tasks scheduled directly or indirectly to the employee.

  • Assist the laboratory supervisor in developing or training new or existing laboratory employees.

Skills / Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles of classical microbiology, including bacteriology, mycology, and microscopy.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment is critical to this position.

  • Experience in aseptic technique and basic microbiology methods and knowledge is required.

  • Knowledge of general analytical procedures including chemical titrations.

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment apparatus and terminology.

  • Ability to make complex mathematical computations, use statistical techniques in the treatment of data, and interpret and apply findings

  • Able to display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals both internal and external to the organization, as applicable.

  • Able to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Able to work unsupervised, make moderate level decisions independently, and solve problems effectively and creatively.

  • Able to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

  • Able to manage work time, determine priorities, seek assistance when necessary, and complete projects within deadlines.
