Hiring Range: $42,650 - $51,180

Shift: Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

*After successful completion of training period candidate will work a rotating ‘on call’ shift responding to emergency calls between the hours of 3:30 pm to 7:00 am and on weekends/holidays as needed.

Locate and mark water, sewer, and storm drains to avoid damage in the excavation performed by other utility companies, contractors, and private residents. Other duties include maintaining locating equipment, performing periodic maintenance checks, gathering necessary marking supplies, and printing daily work orders in the absence of a supervisor.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Drives to the location of work to perform locating, construction staking, and equipment maintenance duties; collects survey data; transports equipment and supplies; establishes work safety zones; uses specialized systems and equipment to perform and record operations; reviews maps; performs technical calculations; prioritizing work orders; and follows safety policies and procedures.

  • Maintains equipment, supplies, and vehicles, to include performing system checks, equipment calibration, and cleaning; performs related preventative maintenance duties; reports equipment issues that cannot be resolved; and ensures proper working conditions of all assigned equipment, systems, and vehicles.

  • Prepares and maintains routine reports, records, field notes, and other documentation; and enters data into work order management or other recording systems.

  • Locating and marking City-owned water, sewer, and storm drains.

  • Organizing and reviewing daily workload.

  • Using GIS to research work orders.

  • Perform light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC).

  • Two years of related experience locating utilities.

  • Valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver's license "or" if you currently have another states driver's license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • One year of advanced study or training past high school equivalency resulting in appropriate technical certification.

  • Three or more years of related experience.

  • Understanding of basic utility infrastructure and interpreting GIS data.

  • Knowledge of various locating devices and uses.
