The Forensic Services Division of the City of Durham Police Department is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as a non-sworn Crime Scene Investigator. The Forensic Services Division is a premier crime scene and forensic investigative unit offering crime scene, crime lab, and property & evidence services to the residents of the City of Durham. The Forensic Services Division is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
Devoted to providing support functions for law enforcement activities and staff including investigatory assistance, evidence processing and retention, crime analysis, victim assistance and forensic science. Incumbents perform a broad range of paraprofessional work involving processing complex transactions and handling escalated customer service requests requiring advanced knowledge and experience, using independent initiative to organize and maintain management support systems and office information including budgetary and financial information. May assist in training staff and serve as a second level of check for accuracy or supervise/lead lower level staff. Decision-making includes how and when tasks are carried out within an operational process but limited by the selection of the process and establishment of deadlines and outcomes.
Responsible for processing crime scenes, collecting and analyzing evidence and/or data, maintaining laboratory and other analyses tools; preparing reports; and providing expert testimony.
Duties/Responsibilities
Collects and processes crime-scene data, including examining fingerprints, performing chain-of-custody operations, taking and maintaining digital images, retrieving surveillance videos and data, and ensuring security of evidence or assigned storage areas.
Maintains weapon and other law-enforcement equipment inventories, as assigned; tests weapons and other equipment to ensure proper working condition; monitors inventory levels; and orders supplies.
Prepares and/or maintains reports, files, records, and other document; updates and maintains databases; prepares displays to present information in court or to higher-level staff; gathers and compiles information; and reviews work for accuracy and completeness.
Provides customer service in accordance with law enforcement protocols, policies and procedures; handles escalated inquiries; assists with information for investigations; and may conduct training as assigned.
Collecting, documenting, and preserving evidence at crime scenes.
Examining fingerprints, documenting findings, collecting and packaging evidence, taking and maintaining digital images.
Preparing displays and information for court and providing expert testimony.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Associate’s degree in forensics, biology, chemistry, criminal justice, or a related field.
Two years of related experience in crime scene investigation, forensics, or related criminal justice work.
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
