Research program under the direction of Dr. Euan Reavie funded by federal and state grants focused on algae research-the microscopic life forms found in freshwater lakes. One of our projects is a large, collaborative research program that provides expertise in the study of aquatic microorganisms to reduce invasive species. The program focuses on curtailing ballast-mediated invasions by analyzing the effectiveness of candidate ship-board treatment systems. NRRI researchers collaborate with national and worldwide organizations to resolve the problem effectively and economically within regulatory guidelines. This position will focus largely on ballast water and general Great Lakes assessments of algae. The Researcher 2 performs research-related work assignments requiring knowledge and experience with complex aquatic species analysis while building on knowledge and skills through multi-disciplinary collaborative research, coordination of large data sets and performing sampling, identification, and analysis. Additional work will eventually include assessments of lake history through paleolimnology, including coring, sediment processing and diatom analysis. Job Duties: 10% Perform field work on aquatic systems, set up and operate equipment, collect samples, and perform assessments of algae. 5% Coordinate and maintain laboratory equipment and supplies. Design, execute and troubleshoot scientific experiments. Investigate appropriate techniques for project needs and application of protocols. Provide expertise in environmental field sampling and analysis. Train and provide guidance to research assistants. 40% Perform laboratory work including sample receipt, cataloging, preparation, and analysis of algae samples. Identify and document species from local and regional ecosystems. 10% Assist in designing research projects; plan and perform complex, multi-step experimental analyses; record all experimental protocols and data; generate sample QA control analysis reports, provide detailed documentation and communication of completed procedures. 20% Perform data entry and maintain accurate databases. Keep meticulously detailed records of all experiments and procedures. Manage large data sets including describing and archiving data sets for future use. 10% Perform experiments and analyze experimental samples. Generate, record, perform data analysis, interpretation, and presentation. Summarize and interpret data. 5% Support Pl in writing narratives and reports as required. Prepare presentations on data and scientific findings. Qualifications Required Qualifications: BA/BS with at least 1 year of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal five years; position involves comparing, verifying and reconciling data to help achieve overall objectives. Experience with microscopic analysis of algae, algal cultures and aquatic environmental field work. Excellent data management and computer skills including proficiency in database and spreadsheet applications. Ability to communicate and work closely with team members in both a laboratory and outdoor setting. Physical ability to work long hours outdoors on watercraft vessels collecting samples, sometimes in inclement weather. Experience successfully working with multi-disciplinary teams under busy schedules. Preferred Qualifications: MSc or higher degree in the environmental sciences. Evidence of scientific expression (e.g., narratives, reports, and presentations). Familiarity with basic statistics used in aquatic ecology. Experience supervising and training field and lab personnel. Experience with aquatic experimental sy tems (e.g., mesocosms, bottle studies). Strong organizational skills.
