Job Information

Amazon Principal Technical Program Manager, Network Observability in Dublin, Ireland

Description

AWS operates one of the world’s largest and most highly available networks which continues to grow rapidly in both size and complexity in response to customer demand. Many AWS customers run mission critical workloads that depend on our networks to be always on. Network Availability Engineering (NAE) is responsible for preventing, predicting, detecting and remediating impairments across our network, both physical and logical, before they cause impact to our customers. We own the software systems that consume trillions of telemetry datapoints per day from the millions of network devices, use various big-data techniques including ML/AI to turn the telemetry into actionable notifications when things go bad, and package them into our event management system for automated mitigation and remediation. For the less than 2% of detected issues that we haven’t yet automated, we provide a suite of expert diagnostic tools that enable our human operators to quickly disseminate next steps. Our vision is that any failure in the network is pre-emptively remediated before it can cause customer impact by systems that require no human intervention. We are seeking a Principal TPM to head our motivated program of network availability and performance improvements, with a key focus on delivering architectural improvements that will drive significant speed and cost improvements in telemetry collection and processing. As a Principal TPM, you will own delivery of the program outcomes of improvements to availability. You will dive deep into all the dependent systems including those of our internal partners across multiple organizations throughout AWS and build a plan of coordinated changes. You will use your technical expertise and deep knowledge of public AWS services to help your partners identify and design technical solutions for outsized opportunities, use your extensive experience of influencing to advocate for their prioritization and then own managing their delivery regardless of where those teams are located. You will create scalable mechanisms for high quality reporting of your program progress to senior leadership across AWS in addition to the necessary mechanisms to support and facilitate each partner achieving their goal in terms of improved speed of alarming and cost savings. As a member of the NAE leadership team, you will contribute to organizational strategy, including engineering best-practices, team health, and strategic planning, as well as participate in hiring and developing the best technical program managers, managers, and engineers to accomplish the organisation's goals and mission. The relationships you build with peers will help ensure the group is using the right AWS services and methodologies for the company’s scale, while recognising the unique requirements of networking problem space. If this sounds interesting to you, talk to us!

Key job responsibilities

  • You are interested in being part of a high-performing, fast moving team with global responsibility for the Network Observability software depended on by all of Amazon’s businesses and customers.

  • Solving complex problems at scale excites you.

  • You do not implement specs from analysts and architects – you talk to your customers and design and deliver scalable, cost-effective solutions to their problems. You foster collaboration with partners and help them achieve their goals. You automate and innovate.

  • You do not push just one technology agenda – you evaluate trade-offs and ensure design choices align with future scale.

  • You Mentor other TPMs and builders, and participate in performance review discussions.
