Universal Technical Resource Services, Inc. (UTRS) is currently seeking Materials Engineer to join our team! This position will be conducting research, testing and evaluation located at Picatinny Arsenal. Opportunity to be engaged in a variety of technology areas with highly skilled scientist, engineers, and technicians at a “world class laboratory.”

What will you be doing?

This position will be a key member of a growing technology and government contracting team. Duties include:

  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of various metallographic, mechanical testing and cold spray apparatus. These systems include; mounting and polishing equipment, optical and scanning electron microscopy equipment, corrosion, tensile and hardness test machines.

  • Responsible for the preparation and examination of metallographic samples. Metallographic preparation includes sectioning, mounting, grinding and polishing of metal/ceramic/composite samples. Metallographic examination involves optical and electron microscopy.

  • Maintenance of metallographic laboratory equipment.

  • Perform mechanical tests such as tensile testing, fatigue testing, corrosion and hardness testing and perform laboratory tests designed to characterize materials, following procedures established by PI’s and will be responsible for acquiring data and assuring that the test data obtained is accurate.

  • Review trends and maintain records in order to control process improvements.

    What skills will the ideal candidate have to be successful?

This position will require the following skillsets and experience:

  • Basic photographic skills are necessary using metallographs, stereoscopes and scanning electron microscopes.

  • Basic knowledge in materials engineering and ability to operate and maintain industrial equipment.

  • Laboratory skills and ability to handle chemicals and delicate instrumentation.

  • Working knowledge of applicable safety and health standards associated with an industrial environment, IS0-9000, NADCAP and FAA certification requirements a plus.

  • Expertise and knowledge in the following materials characterization techniques: digital imaging, optical and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), metallography, chemical analysis (wet chemistry and micro-probe analysis), mechanical testing (hardness, creep, tensile, fatigue, and fracture toughness), corrosion testing and evaluation (salt fog, crevice, galvanic) and x-ray diffraction (powder and residual stress) a plus.

  • Expertise and/or knowledge within the field of materials science and processing to include; metallurgy (ferrous and non-ferrous), materials processing (casting, forging, heat treating, machining), inorganic and organic coating technologies (cold spray, thermal spray, CVD, PVD, electroplating), nonmetals (composites, ceramics and polymers), materials characterization, surface engineering, powder synthesis and powder consolidation methods.
