MITRE Engenuity is seeking a Venture Principal to lead investments for early-stage strategic growth fund. MITRE and MITRE Engenuity invest in companies for a safer world in areas where MITRE has expertise, capabilities, or knowledge of future importance for economic prosperity. We focus on investing in innovation for public good and bring MITRE’s deep research and ecosystem expertise is a differentiator directly impacting the success of startups and their broader impact. Our investment team which the Venture Principal leads will work closely across MITRE and industry to integrate MITRE strategic goals, knowledge, capabilities to evaluate investments and support portfolio companies. The Venture Principal leads a team whose impact from investment is measured within a strong public good framework where financial return is a component of a broader strategy.
Create a sector investment strategy within MITRE technical and business domains including performance parameters for addressing the sector, market size, technology trends, business model innovation, competitive landscape, social, and economic impact
Develop our investment brand and manage relationships with: VC firms, startup accelerators, founders, and other members of the venture ecosystem
Proactively source potential deals that match to investment criteria
Lead team in all stages of an investment including diligence, market and competitive analysis, and developing investment themes, and deal negotiation
Perform due diligence including financial modeling, financial and operational analysis, transaction structuring, and industry research
Manage and coordinate with MITRE Labs for Technical due diligence
Manage and enhance the professional development team members
Lead team creation of investment memos and participate in investment committee discussions
Understand key credit documentation and economic/legal structure
Manage the overall transaction and closing processes
Support investments with a combination of MITRE technical resources and business guidance.
- Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
Exceptional financial modeling, analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving capabilities
Effective writing and communication skills, excellent attention to detail, and good judgment
Ability to work both independently and on a fast-paced team
A desire to work in a start-up team environment
Intellectual curiosity and interest in creating impact beyond financial returns in society or economy
BS or technical degree and 5 years of related experience in startups or investing
Strong understanding of business or technology within one or more of MITRE investment sectors
Graduate degree (MS, or PhD) in a technical area
3+ years in investment banking, private equity, or venture capital
Proven track record of growing an organization from vision to successful realization of the vision.
Extensive network spanning industry and government in the wireless/cellular communications and related verticals (Drones, Transportation, Public Safety, Remote Healthcare, Agriculture, manufacturing, robotics)
Private debt and/or fund of funds investing experience

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$134,300 - $194,600 - $268,500 Annual
