Job Posting Summary

The goal of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program is to support student success through structured opportunities for interactive group learning led by Learning Fellows, near-peers who can model success strategies. SI activities support both content learning as well as improvement of study skills and development of community. SI provides students with additional time outside of the traditional class to process material and practice skills in a low-pressure environment. In addition, it supports the development of an inclusive community of collaborative learners.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

A. Training and Professional Development

  • Attending all pre-semester training sessions

  • Attending all training sessions throughout the semester

  • Committing to improving their skills through regular observation and feedback from the Manager and/or senior members of the team

B. Leading Weekly SI Sessions

  • Being on-time and prepared to lead the weekly SI Session

  • Recording attendance and evaluating participation of students

  • Transcribing attendance and participation to recording system

  • Leading students through active learning activities related to course content

  • Sharing study skills and other best practices for success in the course

  • Fostering an environment of inclusion and community

  • Demonstrating a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with students and co-facilitator

C. Weekly Preparation for Recitation Sections

  • Communicating weekly with the instructor including summarizing salient points from the recitation session

  • Reviewing course related materials prior to the session

  • Attending lectures to prepare for session

D. Policies and Procedures Compliance

  • Complying with policies and procedures of the Department of Natural Sciences and the University

  • including but not limited to the University’s Code of Conduct.

  • Accurately logging in work hours on Banner timesheets in Mercy Connect and submitting them on time

  • Communicating with the Manager about any issues that may arise in sessions

E. Collaboration with Co-Facilitator

  • Communicating weekly (or more) with the co-facilitator to plan SI sessions

  • Dividing duties during the session (e.g. attendance, participation, leading activities)

Senior Learning/Lab Fellows are responsible for all of the above and, in addition, are responsible for the following:

  • Mentoring of Junior Learning/Lab Fellows

  • Assist in daily supervision of assigned partner(s)

  • Providing feedback to Junior Fellows and providing guidance and support

  • Ensuring Junior Fellows have the equipment and resources needed to be successful

  • Ensuring Junior Fellows are communicating with Faculty and completing attendance/participation weekly

  • Promoting SI to faculty and students at Mercy University
