Staff Research Scientist - Plastic Bottle Innovation

The Staff Research Scientist leads Research & Development (R&D) projects in materials, design, or process. Focuses on long-term team and business growth leading other scientists or engineers and creating projects and technical resources. Performs and guides innovative research. Interacts with other team members to create new products and systems, improve line efficiency, quality, or enable other projects which add value to Niagara’s core business. Brings results of these projects to board meetings and leadership meetings for review and discussion and acts as a resource for Niagara leadership.

  • Formulates strategy for R&D growth. Designs and implements new R&D projects in materials, design, or process.

  • Leads scientific team and allocates resources effectively to ensure project completion in a timely fashion.

  • Interacts with board and leadership to communicate the value of technologies and research.

  • Supervises research scientists, engineers, and technicians.

  • Ensures project documentation and communication between all stakeholders.

  • Initiates, develops, and maintains relationships with suppliers and other external collaborators.

  • Presents and communicates research results internally and externally.

Competencies

Proficiency in, but not limited to:

  • Injection molding or blow molding experience. Experience in both is preferred.

  • Supervisory experience: has managed interns, laboratory assistants, and junior engineers.

  • Project management: successfully completes projects in a timely fashion.

  • Oral Communication: speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; demonstrates presentation skills.

  • Written Communication: writes clearly and informatively; presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.

  • Problem Solving: identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully.

  • Proven experience with analytical laboratory equipment (Material Strength Testers, Rheometers, DSC, IV testers, FTIR, XRD, etc.).

  • Advanced data analysis capabilities.

  • Microsoft Office Products.

    Lifting Requirements:

  • 40 lbs. For example, must be physically capable to change injection molds and resin in lab or production equipment.

    Physical Demands:

  • Travel up to 15%. Some work in hot, cold, or confined production environments.

  • Must be able to operate tools used when changing molds and operating R&D equipment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6 Years – Experience in Polymer or polymer composites mechanics, testing and processing field

  • 6 Years – Experience in Position, Research Scientist, Research Engineer, Research Assistant or post-doctoral scholar

  • 6 Years – Experience working with graduate researchers, interns, lab assistants, junior engineers

    *experience may include a combination of work experience and education

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ Years– Experience in Polymer or polymer composites mechanics, testing and processing field

  • 10+ Years – Experience in Position, Research Scientist, Research Engineer, Research Assistant or post-doctoral scholar

  • 10+ Years – Experience working with graduate researchers, interns, lab assistants, junior engineers

*experience may include a combination of work experience and education

Education

  • Minimum Required:

  • Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, and other related fields or equivalent experience.

  • Preferred:

  • Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or equivalent experience. Materials Science and Engineering exposure. Polymer processing or science and Packaging training.

Typical Compensation Range

Pay Rate Type: Salary

$116,624.00 - $163,274.00 / Yearly

Bonus Target: 10% Annual
