Systems Security Specialist Lead

Essential functions (job duties):

Job Purpose

Responsible for technical oversight of information security operations including detection, response, and security device management such as firewalls, VPNs, SIEM and EDR. Act as a technical liaison and provide oversight for campus wide IT information security concerns. Reports to the Senior Director, Information Security & Compliance.

Essential Functions

Lead efforts in resolving all possible security breaches throughout the University network, including leading project teams for both security resolution and proactive measure to prevent future security issues.

Provide technical oversight of professional staff assigned to security function. Lead project teams of assigned student or technicians working on project initiatives.

Identify specific technical recommendations to improve the existing security of the systems. Conduct appropriate follow-up to ensure identified security issues have been resolved. Research, document, and explain security risks to University employees and review results with relevant system administrators for resolution.

Provide leadership on implementation of technology for all aspects of information security operations, including firewall technology, intrusion detection systems, event correlation and endpoint detection tools.

Research current and emerging information security technology trends. Evaluate, test, design, and provide comparative analysis for new technologies or to make purchase recommendations to further improve information security at the University. Serve as lead technical contact and liaison during product discovery with faculty, staff, third-party vendors, and suppliers.

Lead coordination responsibility for implementing and managing firewalls throughout the University network, including policy evaluation and implementation, application debugging, and directing staff in secure implementation of services provided behind the firewall.

Maintain policies and procedures for SIEM and other critical operational tools required to investigate and resolve all unauthorized attempts to access official institutional resources.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Reports to: Senior Director.

Leadership Accountability: Implements operating plans.

Customer Accountability: Interfaces with customers outside the S/C/D.

Freedom to Act: Subject to general input from supervisor.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Security or computer related field required.

  • CISSP or equivalent certification preferred.

Experience

  • Expert (established subject matter expert, 7+ years experience)

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in computer/network security field.

  • Experience with major computer operating systems and how they are affected by InfoSec issues.

  • Experience evaluating technology solutions and conducting analysis of the business needs/expectations, technical capability, and associated security risk.

  • Experience conducting information security audits and presenting the results and remedial solutions to customers in an understandable format.

  • Experience using log analysis and event correlation to detect and identify possible malicious activity.

  • Experience in coordinating and/or developing process for incident response activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Technology Skills: Considerable knowledge of at least one major SIEM tool (QRadar, Splunk, ArcSight, etc.). Considerable knowledge of at least one major firewall platform (Cisco, Checkpoint, Palo Alto, etc.). Familiar with at least one major EDR solution (CarbonBlack, CrowdStrike, etc.) Familiar with common security application software (Nessus, Nmap, tcpdump, netcat, Wireshark, etc.). Understand of Security Automation and Orchestration. Ability to script in Perl, Python, Ruby, or other similar language including understanding of standard web-based APIs.

  • Analytical Skills: Analyzes the impact of potential actions. Demonstrates the ability to apply analytical and logical thinking to gather and analyze information. Capable of analyzing large volumes of data and summarizing results. Proposes, evaluates alternative solutions to achieve organizational goals.
