Description

Under the executive appointment of the Mayor, the Assistant Director - DDOT Operations/Maintenance assists in planning, directing and coordinating operations in the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT). This position is also responsible for providing leadership to attain the goals and objectives of the department.

Examples of Duties

  • Oversee management of staff and the day to day activities of the division in the repair, preventive maintenance, and cleaning of buses and service vehicles.

  • Implement policies and procedures formulated by division heads in the areas of transit operations, rolling stock and physical plant maintenance, materials management and traffic engineering.

  • Ensure the inspection of facilities to assess operational efficiency and resolve problems.

  • Assist in preparing operating statistics, reports and cost analyses to determine and compare efficiency of operations.

  • Assist in determining the impacts of changes and procedures on services, costs, purchasing requirements, and personnel/budget requests.

  • Participate in fiscal management, budgetary planning and staffing analysis.

  • Research and analyze trends in public transit operations and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

  • Assign and oversee special projects to division managers and staff.

  • Represent the department at City Council meetings and interface with City agencies, other public officials and key stakeholders to ensure departmental programs and activities are aligned with related City priorities in the absence of the Director and/or Associate Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum seven (7) years' experience in the administration and management of transportation systems.

  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in a leadership capacity.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirement of this position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
