Principal Software Engineer I in Des Moines, Iowa

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

As a Software Engineer in our Retirement & Income Solutions area, you'll solve business problems through technology. This area supports the many facets of our Sales & Marketing efforts that help our sales teams and advisors with both new and existing business.

In this position, you'll need to be flexible, adaptable, collaborative and willing to play various roles within a scrum team to provide ongoing support and deliver innovative technical solutions, setting the stage for future advisor activity.

Here are a few examples of the kinds of things you'll do:

  • Deliver customer centric solutions that incorporate desired capabilities, security, scalability, and performance.

  • Work within agile methodology and participate in agile ceremonies like sprint planning, backlog grooming and daily stand-ups.

  • Collaborate with your scrum team to design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve software within Java and Mainframe environments while also gaining cloud experience.

  • Solve interesting and complex problems to create a positive customer experience.

  • Collaborate with architecture, technical engineers, and other roles on application design and architecture.

  • Own continuous improvement in yourself, your team and the solutions you build.

  • Develop maintainable and high quality software by integrating automation tests and following best practices as laid out by the team.

  • Core competencies for success:

  • Strong desire to learn and take initiative

  • Ability to effectively collaborate in a team environment and with other teams

  • Ability to influence and participate in code reviews

  • Ability to communicate at both a technical and business level

  • Ability to break down larger work efforts and manage multiple tasks

  • We’re looking for someone with:

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree, preference in a computer science, technology, engineering or math-related field or equivalent experience

  • Basic knowledge of insurance and financial services products preferred

  • Basic planning, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, decision-making and communication skills required

  • Must have the desire and ability to learn new technology and continuously grow

  • Ability to work on cross-functional teams and collaborate with both IT and non-IT partners

  • May be required to provide on-call support

Additional preferred technical experience:

  • Development in Java, Spring, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Maven, Git, AWS, React

  • Automation tooling experience
