Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.

Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.

As a Clinical Support Medical Assistant - The Project , you will provide clinical and administrative support and preventative services to patients of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, cultures, and backgrounds living with or at risk for HIV in clinical and outreach settings. Coordinates with team members to provide positive service experiences for patients. Demonstrates PHC’s iCare values in daily work

    What You Will Do

  • Performs phlebotomy and STI testing and administers medications per scope of practice and program standing orders; follows proper procedures and utilizes universal precautions per PHC’s infection control policies.

  • Completes medication adherence and sexual risk assessments; provides health education; offers assisted interventions as related to each assessment and connects patients with other program services as identified.

  • Assists with scheduling and tracking of outpatient referrals for program patients.

  • Provides care management as delegated to monitor and satisfy HIV health maintenance protocols, screenings, and assist retention in care for HIV positive patient population.

  • Explains lab/diagnostic tests to the patients to include proper preparation.

  • Documents all work accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) and program software (CareWare) systems to support grant requirements. Communicates, verbally or through the EHR notification process, to provide information about patients such as any problems, needs or changes in patient status.

  • Maintain current knowledge of HIV/STI/Hepatitis transmission and prevention information.

  • Collaborates with the prevention team to perform backup assistance for HIV and other STD screenings for those at risk for HIV infection within the clinic and at outreach events.

  • Assists other members of the team to include, but not limited to, answering incoming phone calls, data entry, scheduling appointments, preparing and managing patient records in the EHR, and other tasks required to keep the program operating smoothly.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications You Need to Bring

    Required:

  • Effective Medical Assistant skills with ability to utilize universal precautions in patient care.

  • One year experience in a clinical environment.

  • Strong phlebotomy skills.

  • Must be 21 years of age due to the nature of some outreach events.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and collaboration skills with ability for a team approach to care plus develop and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.

  • Organization and priority skills with detail orientation.

  • Professional skills with ability to remain composed in all situations and show empathy.

  • Basic computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and electronic health record system.

  • Effective problem-solving skills.

  • Licenses & Certifications: Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration issued by AAMA, AMT, NCCT or NHA; current Basic Life Support for HealthCare Providers; current Mandatory Reporter approved for the State of Iowa.

    • Must be obtained with Introductory Period if not current.

    Preferred:

  • Completion of Medical Assisting program from an accredited institution.

  • Associate Degree in related field.

  • Work experience in a community health center or medical clinic.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in Spanish.

  • Experience in the field of HIV and/or sexual health education.

    Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $17.00 - $21.25 per hour/annually. Candidates with extensive work experience related to this position may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay grade maximum of $25.50 per hour/annually.
