Department Summary:

This position resides within Drake University's College of Arts & Sciences, School of Fine Arts, Department of Theatre Arts.

The Department's mission is to ensure students have the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve success as theatre artists and working professionals. To that end, the curriculum fosters understanding and appreciation for all aspects of theatre utilizing collaborative and experiential learning methods. Our faculty strive to assure our students apply knowledge and demonstrate skills acquired in the classroom in the creation of theatrical productions throughout the academic year.

This mission isn’t simply a statement, it’s a philosophy and a guiding principle of the way we teach the art and craft of theatre at Drake.

The Department is comprised of seven full-time faculty as well as teaching associates, artists and adjunct instructors.

The Department offers the BA degree in Theatre as well as BFA degrees in: Acting, Design/Technology, Musical Theatre and Theatre Education. In addition, we offer academic minors in: Design/Technology, Directing, Musical Theatre and Theatre.

Our student-body is made up of approximately 100 theatre majors and minors. The Department mounts 6 productions each year as part of our Main Stage Season.

Job Summary:

This position is for a temporary adjunct instructor in Dance to supplement the instruction of a faculty member taking parental leave.

The candidate will teach two classes (three total sections) during the Fall 2024 semester. Course #1, THEA057 Tap has two sections. Section #1 meets Monday/Wednesday 11:00-12:15 and is a 2-credit hour course with a cap of 14 students. This section is reserved for intermediate and advanced level students who should already be proficient in the basics of tap. The other section of THEA057 meets Tuesday/Thursday from 12:30-1:45. It is likewise a 2-credit hour course with a cap of 14 students. This second section of Tap is reserved for beginners many of whom may have never tapped before.

In addition to the Tap courses, the candidate will also teach one section of THEA131 Choreography meeting Monday/Wednesday from 2:00-3:15. This is a 3-credit hour course with a cap of 16 students. This course examines both the overall structure of choreographing a musical, as well as specific techniques for staging a solo, small group work or production number. Reading and listening assignments will be required as well as practical in-class projects. This course introduces students to both the exploration of the choreographic process and the basic tools used to teach, learn and create musical theatre choreography. Students will be introduced to important musical theatre choreographers in the canon and analyze their style and process with the goal of discovering their own choreographic artistic process.

The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience teaching all levels of tap.

• Experience working as a choreographer and teaching choreography to students.

Preferred Qualifications:

• BFA or MFA in Dance or Musical Theatre
