High School Head Coach

Job Description

Purpose: Position is responsible for coaching student-athletes in game

strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition

and effectively provide the best possible education for each athlete

to develop an appreciation of the sport.

Responsible to: Principal and District Athletic/Activities Director

Salary: Per Annual Supplemental Contract

Classification of Employment: Non-Exempt

Date: September 2015

Qualifications:

1. Teaching certification or ability to obtain Kansas State High School Activities

Association (KSHSAA) Rule 10 certification.

2. Have fundamental knowledge of the activity.

3. Ability to select from a variety of instruction methods to teach sport specific

objectives.

4. Knowledge of CPR and First Aid is encouraged.

Essential Functions:

1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

a. Ability to develop drill and practice activities that teach and enhance

individual/team skill development that makes up the game.

b. Have knowledge of sport rules and strategies.

c. Prepares and implements a schedule of checking out, maintaining, and

checking in equipment.

d. Ability to plan and enforce appropriate safety and health rules and

regulations.

e. Ability to develop a supervision plan that ensures the safety and welfare of

students at all times: locker rooms, trips, practices, etc.

f. Maintain confidentiality about students and others.

g. Ability to communicate in a professional manner.

h. Ability to be an effective communicator with all audiences players, parents,

supervisors, peers and spectators.

i. Ability to receive, understand and follow directions.

j. Be able to model/demonstrate activities and equipment used to develop

basic skills or physical condition.

k. Ability to observe, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate remediation activities

during practice and game conditions for players and team.

l. Must know and be able to apply the developmental stages of each point of

the game to the needs and ability levels of the team/players.

m. Assimilate innovations and adapt to changes when applicable.

n. Establish fundamental philosophy for activity or sport.

o. Analyze and evaluate sports effectiveness.

p. Responsible for providing training rules and expectations and seeing that

rules are taught to each participant.

q. Assist in the scheduling of the activity or sport.

r. Responsible for holding players out of practice/games until they have fulfilled

the KSHSAA and Derby Public Schools requirements for physical

examinations, parental consent and eligibility.

s. To develop and follow a budget in line with districts guidelines and

expectations.

t. Take responsibility for public relations with all audiences.

u. Manage through appropriate selection, assigning duties and responsibilities,

and monitoring of assistants.

v. Support the philosophies of Derby Public Schools and Derby High School

activities.

w. Derby High School Head Coaches assist in making recommendations/hiring

of assistant coaches and coaches at the middle school level.

x. When necessary, must supervise students on out-of-town activities,

including staying overnight and driving a district vehicle.

y. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.

z. Must have a valid driver\'s license.

2. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

a. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged sitting or standing

periods.

b. Requires the ability to physically and manually move, lift, carry, pull or push

heavy objects or materials.

c. Requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach.

d. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.

e. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

f. Requires the ability to sit on a bus for extended periods of time.

g. Requires the ability to carry and/or provide aid to an injured player.

h. Requires the ability to coach in a variety of temperatures, humidity levels,

and various weather conditions.

i. Must have the ability to handle both emotional and physical stress.

j. Must be able to work long and irregular hours.

k. Occupationally exposed to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially

infectious materials base on task and procedur
