Xcel Energy Engineering Intern in Denver, Colorado

Position Summary

Work with the Integrated System Planning - Gas Modeling & Analytics staff to support the build, validation and updating of gas hydraulic models across our gas service territory.

You will work as an Engineering Intern completing tasks that support the tools, programs, and data sets used to update Design Day gas hydraulic models utilized for gas emergency response, gas operations, and system planning and reliability. The models will also be utilized to build out long term plans to identify areas of capacity constraints and associated mitigative efforts. Through practical field and office experience and mentoring, the successful candidates will gain significant professional confidence, specifically in utility system planning, operations and strategy as well as people skills.

This internship would be full-time during the summer starting May 2025. Potential to continue part-time during the 2025 - 2026 school year. Candidates should live within a commutable distance from the Lipan Distribution (1123 W 3rd Ave) office in Denver, Colorado, or the Rice Street Service Center (825 Rice St) office in St. Paul, Minnesota. Non-local residents will not be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Tasks will include the identification, implementation and monitoring of specific process improvements related to data collection, extraction and management that further support the accuracy and confidence around the hydraulic models.

  • Specific projects will revolve around streamlining existing processes to increase innovation, quality and efficiency and errors. Successful candidates will utilize applications such as SynerGi Gas®, AutoCAD, SAP, PowerBI, and Microsoft Suite to produce, analyze and present data results that justify gas system operational recommendations and asset reinforcements.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited undergraduate engineering program, studying areas such as mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $22.50 to $24.00 per hour
