Kaiser Permanente Cardiology Technician in Denver, Colorado

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, performs patient care and clerical duties to assist medical providers in the care and treatment of patients with or evaluation of cardiovascular disease. Performs and assists variety of routine and specialized technical procedures associated with cardiology testing (EKG, Holter/Event monitors, Stress testing, Simple Implantable Cardiac Device Interrogations). Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of ones actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs. Builds rapport and cooperative relationship with members/patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolves problems. Works with other cardiac techs to create a team atmosphere, and open communication.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly.

  • Reviews patients medical records to obtain patients previous EKGs. Reviews appointment schedule to determine appropriate patient visit order, greets and escorts patient to exam or treatment room in a caring and courteous manner. Instructs and/or assists patients in preparation for scheduled procedures.

  • Interviews patient to determine reason for visit, takes weight and vital signs, e.g blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, pulse ox; records information in patients medical record; and reports findings to appropriate personnel, according to standard requirements.

  • Reports to appropriate personnel (RN , NP, or MD) when patient exhibits distress, SOB, chest pain, diaphoretic, nausea and vomiting, dusky in color, pain, or when the patient verbalizes complaints or pain.

  • Performs electrocardiograph testing according to precise standards. Activates and monitors process to ensure technical quality of electrocardiograms, records results following standard procedures.

  • Assists with performing treadmill stress testing (including ability to educate patient about echo, treadmill, nuclear stress tests, pharmacological stress testing according to standard requirements).

  • Ability to report and identify EKG changes during treadmill tests, to assist RNs during testing.

  • Applies holter/event monitors; educates the patient with holter/event monitor procedure.

  • Educates the patients on technical equipment (such as implantable devices) and procedures per KP Policies/Departmental guidelines.

  • Assists medical providers with routine and specialized examinations and procedures as approved by the Nursing Manager.

  • Performs appropriate basic, routine and regular delegated medical functions as directed and within appropriate scope of practice as inferred by knowledge, skill level, and KP guidelines (e.g. EKG tests, sputum specimens, and urine cultures) using appropriate instruments, techniques, and specimen labeling process.

  • Prepares exam rooms for medical providers by monitoring supply inventory, cleaning, stocking and arranging supplies, equipment and instruments.

  • Responsible for maintaining Oxygen tanks (inventory, tanks are operational).

  • Physically demanding position.

  • Screens and routes incoming telephone calls, takes and relays messages to appropriate personnel.

  • Performs routine clerical and reception duties as required, to ensure efficient functioning of department.

  • Orders, stores and maintains adequate inventories of departmental supplies used for cardiac test, exams and procedures.

  • Works with peers to coordinate daily tasks and schedules.

  • Demonstrates customer service skills, customer focus abilities and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs.

  • Demonstrates flexibility and readily assists other staff members.

  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment for patients, self and others.

  • Works within the scope of practice and according to KP policies.

  • Complies with regulatory requirements and standards of care.

  • Identifies and informs manager of training needs.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

  • Successful completion of an approved program in 12 Lead EKG testing and interpretation.

  • One (1) of the following: Passing grade in a Medical Assistant (MA) program with one (1) year experience of cardiac related experience, Certified Cardiac Technician (CCT), Bachelors of Science degree in Medical or Health Sciences (Copy of diploma and transcripts from programs required).
