Job Description

The Transportation Director is a 9 month, benefit eligible role based in Denali National Park, Alaska. The role oversees all aspects of Transportation in Denali.

Transportation Operations include Tundra Wilderness Tour (TWT), Denali Natural History Tour (DNHT), Transit System (VTS), Shuttle, Dispatch, Bus Wash and Box Lunch.

About Denali National Park:?

Doyon/Aramark Joint Venture is the Denali National Park Concessionaire. Open May to September, our guests come to take in the majesty of Mount Denali, the highest point in North America. Our operation manages the transportation, retail, guest service and food and beverage concessions with our client; National Park Service (NPS).

The park welcomes over half a million visitors per year. By road, the area is 5 hours from Anchorage and 2 hours from Fairbanks. Buses traverse the 90-mile road daily throughout the warm summer months, allowing people to hike, view wildlife, climb, and camp.

Employee is responsible for knowing the environmental aspects and associated impacts of their job position. Job specific Environmental Aspects and Impacts will be communicated by Dept. Managers during Environmental Management System (EMS) training.

Job Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate all operational and support functions associated with transportation operations including dispatch, bus wash, box lunch and the tour logistics departments.

  • Build a strong work team and positive environment by recruiting, hiring and training managers, drivers and dispatchers in the day to day oversight, monitoring, evaluation and operation of all Aramark bus driving activity in and around Denali National Park and Preserve.

  • Address client needs in a proper and responsive manner to ensure the highest level of service is provided.

  • Oversee the driver Safety and Training Program including ensuring that monthly safety meetings are conducted, participating in Safety and Communications Meetings and Aramark Safety Meetings.

  • Provide transportation support as a contracted service upon request to Aramark partners and outside organizations. Follow-up billing for services.

  • Develop and supervise Manager on Duty (MOD) program to directly supervise transportation operations during all hours of operation.

  • Assist in product development of new tour products in and around Denali

  • Chair Labor Management Committee meetings for informal resolution of workplace issues.

  • Step 1 respondent to grievances filed by Denali National Park Professional Drivers Association Authorized Field Representatives on behalf of the Teamsters 959 Union.

  • Evaluate and change operational structure and procedure as warranted.

  • Participate in the Environmental Management System (EMS).

  • Responsible for knowing the environmental aspects and associated impacts of the job position. Job specific Environmental Aspects and Impacts are communicated during EMS training.

  • Additional tasks as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Previous experience in transportation management.

  • Strong experience and demonstrated knowledge in logistics organization with a demonstrated ability to prioritize needs and demands.

  • Strong previous supervisory experience with a demonstrated knowledge of supervisory skills.

  • Excellent conflict resolution and customer service skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Previous experience and knowledge Microsoft Office programs.

Preferred Requirements

  • Previous experience in guided tours or interpretive programs strongly preferred.

  • Class B CDL with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction strongly preferred.

  • Professional level training or certification in bus driver training a plus.

  • Knowledge of DOT rules, regulations and record keeping a plus.

  • Knowledge of Springer Miller System (SMS) a plus.

  • Previous Environmental Management System experience a plus.

  • Previous National Park Service experience a plus.

  • Experience managing in a union environment.
