Job Summary: The Process Controls Engineer functions as an integral team member and leader in the Engineering and Maintenance Group for the Stroudsburg Mill located in Delaware Water Gap, PA. The Process Controls Engineer shall have and demonstrate skills in PLC programming, HMI programming, Network configuration, integration, and implementation of process control solutions across industry-standard platforms. This position reports to the Senior Process Control Manager.

How you will impact WestRock:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in programming and configuring Rockwell Automation PLC’s, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix and MicroLogix controllers.

  • Utilize Studio 5000 Logix Designer / RSLogix 500 for developing and maintaining control logic.

  • Design and implement Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications using Rockwell Automation software.

  • Develop intuitive and user-friendly HMI interfaces for operators using Studio 5000 View Designer.

  • Maintain and modify various legacy PLC Systems, HMI’s, associated hardware, and peripheral equipment.

  • Assists with the migration of legacy PLC systems to Rockwell Automation Platform.

  • Configure, integrate, and troubleshoot Rockwell Automation PowerFlex Variable Frequency Drives.

  • Implement and optimize VFD control strategies to enhance motor efficiency and process performance.

  • Configure Stratix 5400 network switches, install and maintain the process network infrastructure.

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve all hardware issues associated with the Process Control System including PLC’s, power supplies, communication and I/O modules, HMI’s, network switches and infrastructure, computers, servers, thin clients, monitors, mouse, and keyboards.

  • Perform all activities to support Process Control System backups, software updates, and disaster recovery for the entire facility (including PLC’s, HMI’s, network switches, computers, and servers)

  • Serve as a subject matter expert related to the electrical wiring and troubleshooting associated with the Process Control System and hardware.

  • Work directly with operations and maintenance to troubleshoot and resolve daily production issues involving the Process Control System, industrial automation, and controls.

  • Work on special projects as directed by the Senior Process Controls Manager.

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with equipment suppliers and maintain vendor inside technical resource contacts.

  • Assist in developing and executing an effective control system training plan for mill E&I personnel, operators and mill process engineers.

  • Serve on mill process optimization teams as assigned. Experience leading/participating in structured problem-solving teams is desired.

  • Strong time management and record keeping skills.

  • Ability to access all areas of the mill as required to perform duties of the position.

  • Will be working in non-climatized facility that can reach extreme temperatures.

  • Position requires less than 10% travel.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What you need to succeed:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering preferred or a relevant engineering-based technical discipline.

  • 3-5+ years’ experience as a Process Controls Engineer in an industrial setting.

  • Proficiency programming PLC’s while online with live controllers.

  • Solid experience with HMI design, programming, and implementation.

  • Solid experience configuring and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives.

  • Strong understanding of instrumentation, sensors, and control system hardware.

  • Must be able to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documents.

  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills to solve complex issues.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and establish effective working relationships with various disciplines in the mill and external service providers.

  • Detail-oriented, conscientious, and willing to learn.

  • Effective written/verbal communication skills to work in a strong team environment.

  • 24/7 support of mill planned and unplanned outages, weekend duty rotation, may involve working nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred skills:

  • Proficiency in Rockwell Automation programming tools, including Studio 5000 Logix Designer.

  • Experience with HMI design using Studio 5000 View Designer.

  • Strong understanding of Rockwell Automation PLC’s, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix and MicroLogix.

  • Familiarity with Rockwell Automation hardware and software for process control applications.
