Ford Motor Company Wireless Engineer in Dearborn, Michigan

This is a new hybrid Planning & Engineering role with the Enterprise Wi-Fi Engineering team. The successful candidate will maintain a list of sites that they will act as both the traditional LAN Planner, and Wi-Fi Engineering single point of contact (SPOC). By combining elements of both roles, the person in this position will be equipped to not only accept requests from their sites, but also perform the testing & solution development for enhancements and optimizations.

• Act as single point of contact (SPOC) for Wi-Fi Planning & Engineering for a list of assigned Manufacturing facilities

• Advocate for customer (e.g., Plant IT, Site IT) on all Wi-Fi related changes and standards updates

• Proactively work to improve & optimize Wi-Fi experience at assigned sites

• Support fine-tuning of radio frequency (RF) profiles for assigned sites

• Act as liaison to Mfg, Campus, and regional LAN Planning teams on new Wi-Fi technology, standards, and processes

• Test & certify wireless LAN controller (WLC) features in response to customer requests

• Develop & maintain Wi-Fi infrastructure bills of material (BOM)

• Consult with LAN Planning teams on the development of estimates, obtaining quotes, and submitting requisitions for new infrastructure

• Ensure the timely updating of maps & AP placement in Catalyst Center after all upgrades/changes to Wi-Fi infrastructure

• Support the implementation of major Wi-Fi changes at assigned sites

• Provide technical consultation to LAN Planning & Network Operations teams

• Continually improve processes & documentation with a customer-centric mindset

• Provide 3rd level support for complex operational issues

• Evaluate & test all wireless (e.g., Wi-Fi, Cellular, Bluetooth) devices proposed for assigned Manufacturing facilities

• Develop skills in emerging technologies including Cisco Ultra Reliable Wireless Backhaul (CURWB), LoRaWAN, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

Primary Skills Required:

  • Understanding of Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) network standards (e.g., 802.11, 802.3)

  • Experience with Cisco Wi-Fi infrastructure and related systems including Catalyst 9800 & AireOS 5520/8540 WLCs, AireOS Wi-Fi 5 & Catalyst Wi-Fi 6/6e access points, Catalyst Center, and Identity Services Engine (ISE)

  • Basic understanding of networking and IP protocols

  • Basic knowledge of Cisco routing & switching, IOS, NXOS, AireOS

  • Understanding of Remote Authentication Dial-in User Service (RADIUS) & related authentication concepts & protocols such as Extensible Authentication Protocol over Transport Layer Security (EAP-TLS), Protected EAP (PEAP), and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Visio, Excel, Sharepoint, and Teams

  • Strong project management skills, organizational skills, personal discipline, interpersonal relationship skills and communication skills (written and oral)

  • Strong process mindset – ability to create, improve, and follow effective & sustainable processes

  • High standards for Quality, technical & professional Excellence, and driving Efficiency

Additional Skills Preferred:

  • Experience with wireless technologies specific to Manufacturing, Warehouses, and auditoriums/lecture halls

  • In-depth knowledge of advanced Wi-Fi/RF features such as Radio Resource Management (RRM), Flexible Radio Assignment (FRA), Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS), Dynamic Channel Assignment (DCA), and optimized roaming

  • Basic understanding of common Wi-Fi clients such as Windows, macOS, and Linux laptops, Apple iOS & Android mobile devices, handheld scanners (e.g., Zebra), and Internet of Things (IoT) devices

  • Software development & automation experience (Python, Netconf, Yang, Ansible, Terraform, Go, Javascript, Github, etc.)

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage several projects at the same time

  • Knowledge of Software Defined Network (SDN) technology – Cisco SD-Access, ACI

  • Familiarity with Agile project management tools & concepts (e.g., Rally, Jira, Scrum/Kanban)

  • Experience with managing budgets and financial forecasts

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or Cyber Security

  • 3 years of relevant industry experience or comparable military service may be considered

Additional Education Preferred:

  • Cisco Certifications – CCNP/CCIE Wireless

  • Other technical certifications (CWNA, CWNP, RCDD, etc.)
