Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working closely with families and the healthcare team to minimize the stress of hospitalization, separation, illness/injury and medical encounters of children from birth to 18 years of age, while providing family-centered care

  • Accurately complete a developmental assessment of assigned patients as well as assess the stress and coping potential of the patient and family

  • Orient patients and families to environment at Scottish Rite for Children, medical procedures, terminology, and disease process

  • Provide therapeutic interventions in an age appropriate manner, including interventions for outpatient procedures as deemed necessary

  • Promote appropriate growth, development, and family relationships for patients by providing environmental stimuli, structured activities, diversional play, unstructured play situations, and schedules based on individual needs

  • Document clinical treatment notes in patients’ chart; prepare progress reports and recommendations for oral and/or written presentation to treatment team members

  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, attends rounds, patient care conferences, and meetings with families as assigned

  • Provide school re-entry, transitional presentations, and disability awareness presentations to promote adjustment, tolerance, and acceptance of those with disabilities

  • Maintain appropriate infection control protocols for all interactions with patients and families

  • Monitor use and condition of supplies, equipment and materials, including donated and purchased items, to ensure safety

  • Maintain adequate amounts of supplies, equipment, and materials, within budget guidelines, necessary to provide child life services

  • Participate in quality improvement activities pertinent to scope of services

    Required Skills/Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree with major academic background in Child Life, Child Development, Human and Family Studies, Psychology, or closely related field is required

  • Certified or eligible for certification in accordance with standards and guidelines of the Child Life Council

  • Individual must have experience in working with ill, hospitalized and/or special needs infants, children and adolescents, including their families

  • CPR certification required
