The Luque Lab is searching for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biology interested in contributing to an innovative project combining structural virology, multi-scale modeling, and environmental virology. The ideal candidate will contribute as a computational biophysicist to a cross-functional project predicting the physical properties of uncultured viruses. The Luque lab has recently established an interdisciplinary method combining theoretical biophysics, mathematical modeling, machine learning, bioinformatics, and metagenomic sequencing that predicts the capsid architecture of uncultured viruses obtained from environmental samples. The postdoc will contribute to the development and application of a new coarse-grained modeling approach that will predict the mechanical stability and the assembly and disassembly conditions of uncultured viral capsids.

The ideal candidate will have a background in computational biophysics, molecular dynamics, coarse-grained modeling, and experience applying these methods to investigate molecular aspects of viruses. Other essential qualifications are a background in statistical learning methods, a strong work ethic, the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and collaborative group, and a track record of publications. The candidate must also be willing to mentor students. Previous experience in structural bioinformatics, metagenomics, structural virology, and phage biology is desirable but not required.

The Postdoctoral Associate will have opportunities for career growth by collaborating with multiple research groups, attending meetings, and through institutional access to career development platforms at the University of Miami.

This is a two-year position with the possibility of a third-year renewal if funds for the project are available. The start date is flexible, but an ideal candidate would begin in Summer 2024.
