Position Summary

The Phlebotomist /Drug Screening Technician Position is responsible for identifying the best methods for retrieving blood, nasal swabs and urine specimens. This position will also travel to on-site locations within a specified area in and around Central North Carolina and beyond, if needed.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Obtain blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks

  • Safely perform nasal and throat swabs

  • Perform urine drug screen specimen collections

  • Maintain specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures

  • Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection maintaining daily tallies of collections performed

  • Maintain quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.

  • Verify test requisitions by reading test orders

  • Verify patient by reading patient identification

  • Maintain professional boundaries with clients

  • Maintain safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations

  • Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders

  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations

  • Enhance laboratory department by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments

  • Maintain the highest levels of customer care while demonstrating a friendly and cooperative attitude

  • Demonstrate flexibility in satisfying customer demands in a high volume, fast paced environment

  • Consistently adhere to business procedure guidelines

  • Must have reliable transportation

    Position Qualifications

  • Certification in Phlebotomy required

  • Experience collecting blood sticks/draws required

  • Experience collecting Nasal Swabs

  • Urine collection experience is a plus

  • High school diploma

  • Ability to handle large, fluctuating volumes of work

  • Ability to travel to offsite locations

  • Strong PC, keyboarding and typing skills

  • Strong customer focus
