Definition

Under general supervision, is responsible for testing and inspecting commercial weighing and measuring devices and verifying declared weights and volumes of goods and commodities; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

  • Inspects and tests weighing and measuring devices such as motor vehicle scales, computer scales, dormant and platform scales, hopper scales, and jeweler's scales for accuracy by comparing measured results to certified prescribed weight loads;

  • Inspects and tests taxicab meters to determine the accuracy of metering devices for the proper recording of mileage and related charges or fares;

  • Inspects and tests liquid fuel dispensing devices such as gasoline pumps, diesel pumps, and kerosene pumps by dispensing the applicable fuels into certified measuring containers to determine if amounts are within acceptable tolerance levels governed by prescribed standards;

  • Inspects and tests motor vehicle tank meters and propane gas meters to determine if the output amounts are within the tolerant levels governed by prescribed standards;

  • Inspects and tests the contents of packaged and prepackaged goods to verify the accuracy of declared weights, volumes, or prices listed or labeled; ensures conformance with method of sale regulations;

  • Inspects and tests commercial timing devices such as vacuums, car washes, parking garage clocks, and dryers in laundromats;

  • Attaches the City of Columbus official seal to weights and measures instruments, devices, and equipment to indicate that such have been properly tested and inspected;

  • Prepares or completes various inspection forms, work reports, logs, or records concerning weighing and measuring devices, fat contents, packages and prepackaged goods, and others as required; prepares and issues notices of violation;

  • Completes continuing education weights and measures training, as required by the State of Ohio, in order to maintain Ohio Training Program Registration; participates in staff development training, conferences, meetings, and seminars concerning weights and measures procedures and techniques;

  • Arranges or conducts educational seminars for schools, senior citizen groups, and other community based organizations concerning consumer education information and programs;

  • Investigates consumer complaints and records results for permanent records;

  • Checks advertisements to guard against false and/or misleading advertising;

  • May give testimony in court or before consumer protection entities;

  • May participate in the training and development of new staff members.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth school grade and one (1) year of experience in a customer relations operation, weights and measures devices operation, repair or inspection operation, or law enforcement operation. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a diploma.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Must obtain the Ohio Training Program Registration through completion of the State of Ohio Weights and Measures Training Program, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, prior to completion of the probationary period.

Possession of a valid Class B commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing the operation of a vehicle with air brakes.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and willreplacethe names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Reading Comprehension, Logic, Reasoning, and Problem Identification, Public Relations, Mathematics, Memorization, Information Ordering, Weights and Measures, and 2016/2019 Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

The exam is expected to be administered in July. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
