System One Senior Bridge Engineer in Columbus, Ohio

Job Description: Senior Bridge Engineer Location: Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati, Ohio

Our Ohio offices are seeking a Senior Bridge Engineer with over 10 years of experience in bridge design to join our established transportation practice. This role involves working on a variety of projects, including the design of new structures as well as the evaluation, rehabilitation, and repair of existing bridge structures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Management: Oversee the entire lifecycle of bridge projects, ensuring adherence to budgets and schedules.

  • Design and Review: Lead the preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and designs. Review project designs for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and client requirements.

  • Construction Management: Direct construction management tasks, including the inspection of construction sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to plans and safety standards.

  • Technical Development: Plan and develop engineering projects addressing unique or controversial issues. This involves exploring subject areas, defining scopes, and developing novel concepts and approaches.

  • Team Leadership: Organize and develop project teams for specific project phases, such as technical studies, design preparation, and project inspection. Delegate tasks effectively.

  • Quality Assurance: Perform QC/QA reviews to ensure projects meet quality control and assurance guidelines.

  • Client Interaction: Develop and present proposals to clients, assist in the development of project understanding, and negotiate project issues such as scope changes or schedule acceleration.

  • Coordination and Communication: Maintain liaison with internal and external stakeholders, acting independently on technical matters. Coordinate activities related to technical developments, scheduling, and manpower.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with industry trends by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.

    Qualifications:

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Experience: Over 10 years in civil/structural design, rehabilitation, and evaluation of bridges, including load ratings, construction documents, specifications, and estimates.

  • Licensure: Ohio Professional Engineer license or the ability to obtain it within six months.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in applying AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the ODOT Bridge Design Manual. Strong experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel) and engineering design packages such as MicroStation (required), AutoCAD (desirable), AASHTO BrR, LEAP Bridge, and LARSA.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Travel: Ability to travel for project site visits.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: Actively advocates for full inclusion in the workplace, fostering an environment that welcomes diversity and values equity.

Preferred:

  • Advanced Education: Master’s degree (MCE / MSCE) in Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.

  • Additional Experience: Class I railroad bridge design experience and knowledge of the AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering. Design-build experience.

  • Client Relations: Experience in developing and presenting proposals to clients in collaboration with Client Managers. Contributes to client marketing meetings.
