Nationwide Children's Hospital RN Nursing Informatics - Nursing Informatics in Columbus, Ohio

This is a Full-time, 1.0 FTE, exempt/salaried, and benefits eligible position.

Minimum pay: $29.98 per hour.

The RN, Nursing Informatics serves in an infrastructure role across the organization by specializing in patient care processes and clinician workflow, leads initiatives to promote effective process design, development and implementation of the electronic medical record and other technologies. The RN Nursing Informatics collaborates with end users to help define health care information problems and solutions by participating in facility wide improvement teams.

  1. Provides direction to clinicians in identification of information system needs.

  2. Participates in software problem identification, validates end-user issues/data, and participates in problem resolution.

  3. Recommends system enhancements to support clinical practice and clinical decision making.

  4. Possesses a broad knowledge of overall hospital operations.

  5. Communicates with ancillary departments to coordinate enhancements, resolve operational problems and improve operational quality of the system.

  6. Follows through to ensure final resolution of problems, recommending longer-term solutions when appropriate and communicating back to individual reporting the problem.

  7. Serves as a focal point for the hospital in resolving inquiries and complaints related to the electronic medical record.

  8. Demonstrates behaviors which support excellence in customer service, patient safety and professionalism.

  9. Responsible for assuring clinician involvement in evaluation of new technology design and function.

  10. This role supports interdisciplinary team members throughout the hospital in regard to the electronic medical record.

  11. Demonstrates independent decision making as appropriate in evaluation of requests for system improvements and determines feasibility and advisability of system changes.

  12. Participates in improvement projects and on assigned committees to provide content expertise on the literature related to electronic medical record to meet patient safety goals, support clinician workflow and achieve care improvements.

  13. Serves as a resource for clinicians on the clinical information system and patient care processes to promote optimal care, reduce errors and achieve organizational goals.

  14. Problem solves application and workflow issues and works through barriers to achieve results by collaborating effectively with users and the information technology staff.

  15. Uses organizational, analytical, written and interpersonal skills to resolve issues in a professional manner.

  16. Maintains knowledge of trends and new technology through memberships in appropriate professional organizations, literature review, and attending applicable conferences and workshops. Develops networks for the sharing of resources and ideas between clinicians within Nationwide Childrens Hospital and other institutions; particularly user groups.


  1. Bachelor Degree in Nursing is required. Masters degree in Nursing is preferred. Registered Nurse must be licensed to practice in the State of Ohio.

  2. Certification in Nursing Informatics through ANCC is desired.

  3. Information systems experience required. Demonstrated knowledge of documentation requirements and competence in the use of current on-line documentation systems.

  4. Three to five years clinical experience required.

  5. Strong communication skills required to articulate the process of patient care delivery in the clinical environment, and to teach adult learners. Teaching or mentoring experience preferred.

  6. Strong analytical and organizational skills required to make recommendations for automation of clinical processes.

  7. Interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership for system responsibilities and to interact effectively with a variety of hospital departments, clinicians, and outside vendors. Must be able to work effectively in groups.

  8. Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
