Definition

Under general supervision, is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing and removing industrial mechanical equipment; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

  • Installs functional and structural parts in machinery and mechanical devices;

  • Removes and replaces defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools;

  • Dismantles devices to gain access to parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools;

  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments using hand tools, power tools, levels, plumb bobs, straightedges, and other analytical devices;

  • Inspects, performs preventative maintenance on, tests performance of, and attempts to detect and/or locate possible malfunctions of industrial mechanical equipment while in operation;

  • Performs and documents preliminary diagnostic evaluation of failed equipment, parts, components, and mechanical systems;

  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections;

  • Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements using rules, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments;

  • Performs maintenance and repair for industrial pumps which may include lubrication, rebuilding, alignment of motors, nearby valves maintained or exercised, or other maintenance tasks performed;

  • Handles pressurized water (e.g. pressure washers, fire hoses) to perform wash outs of plant facilities that support the treatment flow of water or wastewater and may include channels, basins, flocks, water towers, tanks, or other treatment infrastructure;

  • Accesses plant equipment or plant facilities via ladders, stairs, motorized lifts, tunnels, confined space entry, manholes, or other access methods;

  • Follows safety precautions, such as for confined space or lockout/tagout programs; completes paperwork; sets up and checks safety devices; acts as line of communication; supports safety awareness;

  • Cuts, welds, bends, and /or straightens metal parts as needed;

  • Cleans work area after completion of job;

  • Lubricates and cleans parts and equipment;

  • Performs shaft alignments using dial indicators, lasers, or other devices;

  • Utilizes computer software to complete work orders and timesheets;

  • Drives motor vehicle to and from job site and other work-related locations;

  • Assesses functionality of mechanical equipment by viewing information on the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system (e.g. wet wells, tanks, pumps);

  • Completes work orders and related forms;

  • Notifies appropriate personnel of necessary downtime associated with projects that disrupt normal operations;

  • May operate various light and heavy-duty equipment;

  • May work with or around hazardous chemicals and noxious odors requiring personal protective equipment, such as full-face respirators or particle masks;

  • May lead and evaluate the work of maintenance helpers and/or temporary maintenance staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth grade and two (2) years of experience assisting in the installation, maintenance, repair and/or removal of industrial mechanical equipment. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth school grade completion.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and willreplacethe names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 80% covering Safety, Maintenance Techniques, Mathematics, Reading Plans, Tool Identification & Usage, and Information Ordering; and a computerized Work Order weighted 20%.

The exam is expected to be administered in April. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
