Job Summary

The Environment and Agriculture (E&A) Business Line is part of the Environment and Infrastructure Business Unit in Battelle’s Applied Science & Technology Organization. E&A is responsible for delivering strategic growth and business priorities focused on a wide range of environmental and agriculture crop protection services.

The Environmental Solutions Division is responsible for developing and delivering environmental solutions for contaminated site assessments through remediation, natural resource management, environmental data management, and general environmental support. The Environmental Solutions Division Manager has operational responsibility for approximately 100 staff and over $50 million in revenue from Government and Commercial clients. The Environmental Solutions Division Manager is responsible for the implementation of the environmental portion of the E&A annual growth and business plan, including managing relationships with clients and other stakeholders. Specific responsibilities include.

This position is located in either Columbus, OH , or Norwell, MA but other locations may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the Division to achieve growth year/year and profitable performance.

  • Develops and implements strategic and operational business plans that define the market focus and operational services the assigned group will provide to clients.

  • Responsible for the overall financial performance of the assigned group including attaining gross business volume, net income, and intellectual property goals as well as maximizing profitability, cost control, and investment decisions. Manages resource expenditures including percent time on project for staff, capital equipment, marketing, and internal research and development budgets.

  • Plans, initiates, and performs marketing activities to identify potential clients, new business segments, and market needs to maximize business opportunities. Contributes to proposals and bid/no bid decision processes. Establishes pricing policy and specific pricing practices.

  • Performs manpower planning and ensures appropriate staffing levels and skill mix commensurate with the business. Directs and organizes staff assignments for various projects.

  • Manages human resource activities such as developing recruiting strategy and hiring staff, establishing performance goals and appraising performance, and providing opportunities for career development. Manages relationships of staff and other groups. Provides necessary training and mentor opportunities for staff.

  • Ensures staff conducts research, development, and technical activities within the established business ethics, safety, and quality policies and procedures. Reviews and approves, as necessary, proposals, reports, and articles.

  • Directs efforts to produce efficient sales results and assures that sales investments are consistent with the Battelle strategic thrust areas.

  • Works across Battelle market sectors, global businesses, and national laboratories to ensure continuity and coordination in the areas of business development, client management, program management, and opportunity expansion. Plans effective teaming arrangements, establishes shared accountabilities and shared returns, and monitors results.

  • Manages facility and equipment needs including space requirements, new facility and modification decisions, and procurement for home office and offsite locations.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with key clients and federal agencies and their staff. Exhibits a clear understanding of customer requirements to ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Implements, executes, and communicates the policies and strategic emphasis of senior leadership to staff. Integrates decisions into operating policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field.

  • 10 years of relevant project management experience; at least 5 years of which must include line management experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in the environmental management field, with emphasis on site management and remediation.

  • Experience managing environmental operations across a broad range of services with demonstrated experience in project financial management, risk management, quality systems, and health and safety.

  • Must have sufficient communication skills to effectively interact with senior leadership and within client organizations, subcontractors, consultants, and staff. Requires critical human relation skills to understand, select, develop, and motivate others.

  • Broad-based experience communicating with clients and industry consortiums.

  • Ability to manage staff working from multiple locations including Battelle offices, client sites, and home offices. 25% travel will be expected if not located in either Columbus, OH, or Norwell, MA.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree or MBA is preferred.

  • Experience working with emerging contaminants is highly preferred.

  • Experience in financial management to accurately forecast sales, revenue, cost, and margin performance.

  • Experience managing contracts that include a broad portfolio of environmental services ranging from natural resource management to environmental health and safety, to compliance is a plus.
