JOB DESCRIPTION

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work environment (combination of remote work and in-office reporting), with the coordination and approval of the appropriate supervisor. The position is located in and will report out of Columbus, OH.

Position Title: Distribution Engineer and Programs Manager

Reports To: Vice President of Technical Services and Compliance

FLSA Status: Exempt

Basic Functions: Provides engineering assistance and support for Member programs.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provides engineering and technical services to Members regarding their distribution and occasionally transmission systems (including, but not limited to, substations and distribution facilities) by providing support, cost estimates, project management and designs for Member projects on medium voltage distribution utility facilities (4kV through 138kV).

  2. Assists Members with their interconnection questions and issues. Consult with Member communities to determine electric system needs and identify improvements associated with their interconnection to outside entities.

  3. Provides Members with technical and engineering project management services including fault calculations, load flow modeling and studies, system impacts and long-range planning studies, as requested.

  4. Writes technical specifications for bidding and develops templates to be shared with Members including but not limited to framing standards and distributed generation interconnection documents.

  5. Supports Members with technical questions related to distribution system trouble shooting, power quality analysis and review, capacity questions, and other miscellaneous aid at customer locations (in some cases, 600V or less). Oversee consultants performing power quality investigations, infrared inspections, and other troubleshooting.

  6. Provide program management assistance and support for Member programs including, but not limited to, OSHA Training, Circuit Rider, small Member electric utility management, General Safety, and RP3.

  7. Serve as a technical expert in the development and advancement of Member training programs.

  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree is required. A professional engineering license is preferred.

  2. Four to six years electrical distribution design and/or planning experience is highly preferred. Experience with utilities is highly preferred.

  3. Must work independently, be highly accurate, detail oriented and possess the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize project workloads.

  4. Ability to work closely with Members, contractors and staff to manage projects.

  5. Must have excellent verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills as well as the ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing.

  6. Must demonstrate expertise in the use of software tools, spreadsheets, written reports, database reports and graphical presentations (e.g. Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint). Expertise with AutoCAD, EasyPower or other modeling software is preferred.

  7. Must be knowledgeable of power capacity and power energy concepts and applications; load factor; transmission and distribution, substation and generation facilities.

  8. Must have a working knowledge of NEC, NESC, OSHA, NERC and other industry standards and practices.

  9. Must be willing to travel approximately 30% of the time.
