Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS), Space and Launch Division, is seeking a Lead Systems Engineer (Level 4) to support the team in Colorado Springs, CO. Our team focuses on the development of new global military satellite communications (MILSATCOM) ground system functionality for the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) F11 satellite. In addition, the Space and Launch Team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit. We work with proprietary customers in the development of the next-generation technologies in space. Our group works all facets of engineering from technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.

Position Overview:

The Lead Systems Engineer will be a part of a high-performing team that is immersed in high intensity development projects. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technology, work with multiple other DoD subcontractors, and contribute to a successful Program launch and handover to the Government in late 2025. This position will focus on the design, test, and integration of new F11 satellite software, while continuing the support of legacy F1-F10 Satellites. There are multiple “need” areas currently open on the program, ranging from scripting in Python, to Requirements definition work, to becoming and acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on our design and directing the SW team in their coding, to serving as a Product Owner of one Scrum Team, etc. The intent is to hire two Systems Engineers to fill the aforementioned responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the WGS ground station system.

  • Direct Software Engineers in the code implementation of the design (and potentially serve as a Product Owner for one Scrum Team).

  • Scripting in various languages, including Python.

  • Requirements definition and Requirements maintenance in DOORS.

  • Manage a DoD subcontractor’s input/integration into the Boeing system.

  • Able to think abstractly and work at high levels of abstraction (i.e., able to work with requirements without being drawn into the details of design and implementation decisions).

  • Able to formulate questions during interviews with stakeholders to gain insight of needs, and determine the scope of a problem to be solved.

  • Able to collaborate well with customers, domain experts, managers and engineers.

  • Able to manage the multiple concurrent issues, ambiguities and contradictions that typically occur during requirements engineering.

  • Flexible when confronted with evolving goals and requirements.

Work Authorization: (Highlight the appropriate work authorization)

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance post-start (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active). An interim and/or final U.S. confidential clearance Post Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.

  • 3 years or more of experience with Software Systems Engineering.

  • 2 years or more of experience with scripting.

  • 1 years or more with Requirements management (DOORS or similar).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Satellite ground station experience

  • Knowledge of the requirements engineering process, practices and tools specific to the project.

  • Knowledge and/or experience in requirements analysis decision, allocation and verification/validation techniques.

  • Verbal and written communication skills that can be used to clarify and effectively specify requirements.

  • Knowledge of the customer’s overall business and the relevant application domain.

  • Experience working with requirements of the software system to be developed are solicited from the stakeholders and defined.

  • Functions to be performed to satisfy those requirements are identified.

  • Experience coordinating with the customer, interviews with others that have knowledge of the problem domain, and study of the available documentation. (The results may be captured in operational scenarios, use cases, state diagrams, environmental models, context diagrams, etc., as required by the project).

  • Experience working with requirements and system architecture that are analyzed as the basis for defining derived software requirements. (This analysis includes interface identification and determination of communication protocols, timing relationships, and the functions to be performed. These analyses determine the technical feasibility for achieving a solution. The results may be captured in lower-level refinements of the operational scenarios, use cases, state diagrams, environmental models, context diagrams, etc., as required by the project).

  • Experience working with Requirements Specification and Validation.

  • Experience deriving software requirements are defined and captured using required tools, and reviewed with the appropriate stakeholders. (A software requirements specification may be prepared. The requirements are verified to ensure that they satisfy the higher level requirements and are within the project scope, and validated to ensure that they meet the customer needs).

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
