INDEPENDENT HOMES INC Direct Support Professional (DSP) in Colonial Heights, Virginia

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Direct Support Professional. In the position, you will play a vital role in helping our clients with intellectual, cognitive, or developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence. The mission of the organizations we represent are to design systematic programs that meet the physical, mental and emotional capacity of all the individuals.

Direct Support Professional Responsibilities

  • Performing personal care tasks, including assistance with basic personal hygiene and grooming, feeding, and ambulation, medical monitoring, and health care related tasks. Fostering positive relationships between individuals served and their housemates
  • Ensuring client safety and maintaining a safe environment
  • Reminding/supporting individuals with self-administration of medications (with proper training)
  • Encouraging self-help activities
  • Reporting changes in individuals condition or family situation to the office
  • Documenting services provided
  • Performing home management functions such as light housekeeping, laundry, bed making, and cleaning
  • Planning meals, shopping for groceries, preparing and serving food/meals, feeding and clean-up
  • Accompanying individuals to scheduled appointments
  • Transporting clients or running errands for individuals
  • Helping with deescalating during troubled times
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school degree
  • Valid driver's license (in most cases)
  • Ability to work in home-like settings
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and written) with all levels of personnel, internal and external to the company
  • Ability to handle physical aspects of job, including bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking for periods of time
  • Ability to type and have basic computer skills
  • At least a year of experience in working with adults w/disabilities
  • American Sign Language (ASL) is a plus and may receive extra compensation

Additional Information (each bullet below is equal to an whole shift and cannot be broken up)

  • Sunday-Wednesday 10:45pm- 8am (Overnight Shift) = 36 hours per week
  • Sunday 7:45am-11pm, Monday- Wednesday: 1:45pm-9:00pm = 36 hours per week
  • Sunday 6:45am-8pm, Monday- Wednesday: 2:45pm-11:00pm = 37 hours per week
  • Thursday -Friday 1:45pm-9:00pm Saturday: 7:45am - 11:00 pm = 29 hours per week
  • Thursday -Friday 2:45pm-11:00pm Saturday: 6:45am - 8:00 pm = 27 hours per week
  • Thursday - Saturday: 10:45pm - 8am (Overnight Shift) = 27 hours per week
