We are looking for a Veterinary Technician I to join our dynamic Equine Orthopedic Surgery team of dedicated, caring veterinary medical professionals at the only veterinary teaching hospital in the state of Texas!

Our Equine, Food Animal and Field Service departments have access to state-of-the-art equipment and advanced facilities and are a model for excellence throughout the state of Texas and beyond. The Veterinary Technician I, Equine Ortho. Surgery, under supervision, assists in the treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under the supervision of a professional staff member or Veterinary Technician II or higher. Provides assistance to the professional staff and helps to maintain a sanitary and functionally well organized service within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills

  • General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements:

  • No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, or dust

  • Ability to lift or move heavy loads

  • Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor

  • May be on call for weekday, weekend, and holiday emergency surgeries as needed

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • One year experience in a veterinary medical setting

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician

Salary: $13.01 - $16.72 hourly

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the cleaning, organization, and restocking of the surgical ward, including patient's stalls, as needed

  • Sets up stalls for incoming patients as needed

  • Performs patient side initial cleaning of all hospital equipment used (including,, but not limited to endoscopes and dental equipment)

  • Uses proper handling of all surgical instruments and packs

  • Assists in the supervision and teaching of veterinary students

  • Performs student orientation sessions

  • Assists in the supervision of student technicians and veterinary technician assistants

  • Assists in the administration of medications via I.V., I.M., subcutaneous, oral, and topical treatments, or performs these treatments with the guidance of a Veterinary Technician II or higher level staff

  • Assists with or under the guidance of, a Veterinary Technician II or higher level staff member, places I.V. catheters

  • Assists with other patient treatments including, but not limited to bandage changes, hydrotherapy, forced exercise, and wound care and management

  • Monitors patients

  • Assists with patient history and initial exam

  • Grooms patients

  • Assists with tasks associated with diagnostics including, but not limited to jogging horses for lameness exams, patient restraint for nerve blocks, radiology, and ultrasound exams

  • Assists with general patient restraint for all treatments, procedures, exams, and diagnostics

  • Assists with patient receiving and greeting clients

  • Assists with recording patient history and initial exams

  • Assists with patient discharge, including facilitating trailer loading and discussion of discharge instructions with clients

  • Relays questions to clinicians or facilitates client/clinician discussion

  • Answers incoming client calls to clinicians

  • Relays client messages to clinicians

  • Schedules appointments, etc

  • Enters patient data into computer database/patient chart

  • Enters itemized charges into computerized billing system

  • Submits department requests including, but not limited to Anesthesia, Ultrasound, Imaging, Surgical, and Laboratory

  • Performs or supervises the recording of patient reports, surgical, and anesthetic reports into database

  • Assists in patient anesthetic induction and recovery

  • Assists with patient surgical positioning

  • Performs surgical prep

  • Performs or instructs others on intra-operative operating room circulation

  • Performs surgical equipment programming, operating, trouble shooting, and disinfection

  • Prepares surgical suites for procedures

  • Uses proper operating room post-surgical clean up and disinfection techniques

  • Performs proper handling and care of surgical instruments, equipment, and packs

  • Stocks surgical supplies for each case

  • Follows proper infection control protocol

  • May be on call for weekday, weekend, and holiday emergency surgeries as needed

  • Performs other duties as assigned
