Description

Under supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Forestry Worker performs tasks customarily associated with professional arboriculture and provides support to all aspects of forestry operations. This includes but is not limited to tree pruning, ornamental and shade tree pruning, tree planting, tree and trimming, tree removal, equipment operation, “right of way” maintenance and other necessary remedial care and/or maintenance.

Principal Duties

  • Perform tree planting and maintenance throughout the City’s properties to include, planting, pruning and removal of trees on public land including parks, trails, cemetery, and along public rights-of-way.

  • Perform skilled maintenance of trees including staking, cabling and mulching of younger trees, trimming/pruning for clearance of vegetation impeding vehicle and/or pedestrians utilizing small bucket truck and/or tree climbing equipment as necessary. Apply low-toxicity pesticides as necessary using tree injection, soil French, backpack sprayer, and root feeder application equipment.

  • Conduct field assessment of public trees safety conditions; identify potential safety issues or diseased trees in need of trimming and/or removal; recommend and implement the removal of dead or hazardous wood and/or trees as necessary.

  • Assist in preparing for special events when needed.

  • Inspect vehicles and equipment daily to insure they are in safe operating condition.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent

Possess and maintain a valid State of Texas Class B CDL, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.

Available to work weekends, evenings and holidays

Strong manual dexterity skills to operate maintenance tools including but not limited to chain saws, hand saws, pole and hand pruners, push spreaders, and pesticide sprayers.

Ability to perform essential duties in an environment that entails a variety of weather conditions and extreme temperatures; work at various above ground height levels; frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, and pushing/pulling; physically lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; and the ability to operate and work from a bucket truck.

Preferred: 1-2 years' experience in tree maintenance and removal

Knowledge of techniques and safety aspects of performing tree work from a rope and saddle

ISA Certified Arborist

Knowledge of Forestry ANSI policies
