General Responsibilities

  • Lead the investigation and deployment of new technologies that advance research capabilities, ensuring the appropriateness, quality, security, and scalability of these solutions.

  • Collaborate with economists to optimize their research activities across various distributed and cloud computing environments.

  • Leverage a deep understanding of the technical requirements of the academic research process to design and implement improvements in data workflows, enable productive and secure collaboration with coauthors, ensure appropriate data access and storage, and refine and enhance code.

  • Understand and evaluate the impact of infrastructure changes and software releases on research operations by maintaining strong relationships with local and national IT partners.

  • Drive issue resolution on behalf of researchers, ensuring full resolution by the appropriate team.

  • Maintain relationships with other practitioners in the Federal Reserve System’s Research IT community to share information and collaborate on the resolution of complex issues.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

  • Adhere to the Bank's attendance policies through regular and prompt attendance.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field (Math, Science, Finance, Economics), Master’s degree in IT or related field or MBA preferred.

  • 7+ years of professional work experience leading the deployment and/or management of physical and virtual systems, identifying and implementing innovative solutions, setting priorities, driving performance, and executing plans on schedule. Experience working in a scientific or academic computing environment and expertise in information security preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Skilled in understanding the requirements of operating in a scientific or academic computing environment or equivalent.

  • Ability to think through and creatively solve complex problems, completing root cause analysis and often looking beyond obvious solutions.

  • Confident in following vaguely defined procedures and making decisions and recommendations that advance the objectives of the department.

  • Effective in working in a team environment to troubleshoot and resolve issues that often require dependency on other experts.

  • Regular use of version control solutions such as git and svn.

  • Experience managing Linux and Windows systems and regularly working with four or more of the following: Bash, Powershell, XML, XSLT, Python, R, Matlab, Julia, SAS, STATA, Fortran, slurm, C/C++, SQL.

  • Working knowledge of networking configurations and networking components including security technologies.

Physical Demands and General Working Conditions

Traditional office environment: Employees typically sit most of the day, work with a computer and may answer/respond to phone calls. Physical movement consists of walking for meetings, breaks, etc. Ability to lift items weighing approximately 20 pounds on a limited basis is required. Employees may be required to travel by car/air.
