Cleveland Clinic Animal Husbandry Technician I - Aquatics in Cleveland, Ohio

Responsibilities:

  • Performs daily health observations and monitors the condition of research animals.

  • Provides custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to animals according to the standard operating procedures.

  • Receives animal shipments and completes required documentation.

  • Maintains and adequately supplies the areas used for technical procedures.

  • Transports supplies, equipment and animals to and from various locations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU.

Certifications:

  • None required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

  • Must be flexible and complete the job before leaving work.

  • Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience in the care of research aquatic species or similar knowledge highly preferred.

  • Experience in the custodial care of animals preferred.

  • Proficient computer skills and ability to learn new systems quickly preferred.

  • Prior experience understanding and following detailed scientific or medical instructions given by investigators and/or veterinarians.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing over 50 pounds; frequent standing, bending and walking; must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors, sights, animal bites and scratches.

  • May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
