Description of Work

Employee will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of Electrical, Electronic, and Computerized Traffic Control Systems mainly in Cleveland County, but also throughout Division 12. The Employee will also assist in the installation, testing, and inspection of new Traffic Control Systems and existing systems which are upgraded. Duties performed include: install traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, trace out electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantle and reassemble components, replaces worn or faulty parts. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Skills required include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Ability to diagnose source of equipment failures. Ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Overtime work is required when necessary and position is subject to emergency callback as well as required to take part in on-call rotation in response to after-hours traffic signal related issues. The Electronics Technician is required to maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished and keep an accurate record of time worked and all materials used via computer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision.
Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.
Additional Expectations:
Skills required include: general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe/efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trades. Ability to diagnose source of equipment failures. Ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 60 feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Must possess ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. Must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Safety toe footwear are needed for this position. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class B CDL with no endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission
